Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"If you placed all the pitchers in the history of the game behind a transparent curtain, where only a silhoutte was visible, Juan's motion would be the easiest to identify. He brought to the mound beauty, individuality and class." - Sportswriter Bob Stevens in Baseball's Greatest Quotes (Simon & Schuster, Kevin Nelson, Juan Marichal, 1982)

Juan Antonio Marichal was a Major League Baseball player who pitched for the San Francisco Giants (1960-1973), Boston Red Sox (1974), and Los Angeles Dodgers (1975). The Dominican Dandy, his nickname, had a legendary high leg kick, incredible control, and an intimidating arsenal of pitches that he was able to release accurately from sidearm to overhand—attributes that carried him from a small farming village in the Dominican Republic to the National Baseball Hall of Fame (Class of 1983).

Did you know that when Juan Marichal made his big league debut, on July 19, 1960, in Candlestick Park, he threw a complete game shutout, struck out twelve batters, walked one, and allowed only one hit? Do you know what pinch-hitter broke up the no-hitter with a two-out single in the eighth inning? [Answer]

Did you Juan Marichal won 25-or-more games three times (1963, 1966, 1968), 20-or-games six times (1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1968, 1969), led the National League in wins twice (1963, 1968), complete games twice (1964, 1968), shutouts twice (1965, 1969), and won an ERA Title in 1969, but never once was voted the winner of a Cy Young Award?

Did you know that Carl Hubbell, on May 8, 1929, pitched the last no-hitter by a twirler wearing a NEW YORK Giants uniform? Why did we mention this here? Because Juan Marichal, on June 15, 1963, pitched the first no-hitter by a twirler wearing a SAN FRANCISCO Giants uniform!

Did you Juan Marichal finished his career with 243 wins, the most by any pitcher born in the Dominican Republic? A record he held for another 43 years, until being passed by a pitcher with another great nickname — Big Sexy!

Juan Marichal dominated the 1960s, winning 191 games, more than any pitcher in Major League Baseball during that decade! Rounding out the top five are Bob Gibson (164 wins), Don Drysdale (158 wins), Jim Bunning (150 wins) and Jim Kaat (142 wins). The Dominican Dandy also led the '60s in complete games (197), shutouts (45), and balks (13)!
