Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"Mike McCormick doesn't speculate about what he'd be worth in today's major leagues. Why drive himself crazy? He was not just a very good pitcher -- in an era of good to great pitchers in the 1950s and 1960s -- he was left-handed, which then as now is a baseball blessing when it comes to continued employment. McCormick, a member of the first San Francisco Giants' team in 1958, lasted 16 seasons in the big leagues, won 134 games and in 1967 was the NL Cy Young Award winner after going 22-10 in his second tour of duty with the Giants. Remarkably, most of that was accomplished with a bad pitching shoulder. 'I was 100 percent physically only in my first five seasons, but I had some of my better seasons after I was hurt (in 1961). My salvation was that I was left-handed and had good control, so I was allowed to stay around.'" - Staff Writer Dwight Chapin (The San Francisco Chronicle, 03/24/2002, WHERE ARE THEY NOW / Mike McCormick / Years with Giants more than a left-handed compliment, Source)

Michael Francis McCormick was a Major League Baseball player who pitched for the New York Giants (1956-1957), San Francisco Giants (1958-1962, 1967-1970), Baltimore Orioles (1963-1964), Washington Senators (1965-1966), New York Yankees (1970), and Kansas City Royals (1971). Mike, his nickname, graduated from Mark Keppel High School in June 1956, and made his major league debut on September 3, 1956, without ever playing in the minors!

Mike McCormick had a National League (NL) leading earned run average (2.70 ERA) in 1960, the first left-handed ERA Champion in San Francisco Giants history, joining two righties; Stu Miller (2.47 ERA in 1958) and Sam Jones (2.83 ERA in 1959). Neither righty won the Cy Young Award, and neither did McCormick in 1960, but when Mike had a NL leading 22 wins in 1967 (2.85 ERA), he did win a Cy Young, the first Giants pitcher in franchise history to win the award. Did you know that Mike McCormick surrendered 255 home runs during his career, to 152 different batters, in 26 different ballparks? Number 213 occurred on July 14, 1968, in the bottom of the third inning, with two men on base, and two outs — the 500th home run of whose Hall of Fame career? [Answer]

Did you know that when Mike McCormick stepped onto the field in LA Memorial Coliseum, on April 18, 1958, he became the first Giants player to wear #40 after the franchise had relocated to San Francisco? A year earlier, when McCormick stepped off the field on September 21, 1957, he became the last NEW YORK Giants player to wear #29 in a regular season game.

Did you know that Mike McCormick once threw a National League No-Hitter, that is no longer an official no-hitter? On June 12, 1959, he did not allow a single hit to the Phillies, and his Giants won the game 1-0, however, after the fifth inning, rain began, and the game was delayed. The umpires, since the game had completed the required five innings, called the game due to inclement weather, it was officially in the books and it was listed as a no-hitter. In 1991, Major League Baseball changed the official definition of a no-hitter to include that it must be at least nine-innings, and removed it from the list. You can still find those unofficial no-hitters here on Baseball Almanac!

Mike McCormick No Hitter

Mike McCormick No-Hitter | The Gazette & Daily | June 13, 1959 | Page 24

"I was lucky. I'm just glad I won. I've been having my troubles lately. You know I lost my last two. I'm real pleased. Of course it would have been better if it had been a nine-inning no-hitter—but I'll take it. No (this wasn't my best performance), I'd have to say my best performance was against the Phillies the last time we met them on the coast. I had a no-hitter going for 7 1-3 innings until Granny Hamner touched me for a double. They got two more hits in the ninth, but I ended up with an 8-0 victory. I wasn't as strong tonight as I was in that 8-0 game. My arm was starting to get stiff tonight because of the delays." - Mike McCormick (No-Hitter Post Game Press Conference)
