"The bottom line is I enjoy winning. Losing is no fun. As long as you step out on to that field and you've got a fighting chance to win, that's all you can ask for. It seems like a lot of years ago. It's all been so good. I've been blessed to play baseball and I've had a lot of fun." - McGriff, Fred. Baseball Digest. August 1998.

Switch-hitting Eddie Murray won a Silver Slugger Award in the American League with the Baltimore Orioles, in 1983 and 1984, and a Silver Slugger Award in the National League with the Los Angeles Dodgers, in 1990, the first slugger to receive the honor from a team in each league at first base. Fred McGriff matched the Hall of Famer, winning with Toronto Blue Jays (AL) in 1989, then with the San Diego Padres (NL) in 1992, and the Atlanta Braves (NL) in 1993, the first left-handed hitting first baseman to win a Silver Slugger Award (SS-AL & SS-NL) in each league.
Did you know that Fred McGriff was only the second player in baseball history to lead each league in home runs? The Crime Dog led the American League first in 1989, with the Toronto Blue Jays, then the National League in 1992, with the San Diego Padres. The slugger who came before McGriff was hall of famer Sam Crawford, who led the National League in 1901, with the Cincinnati Reds, then the American League in 1908, with the Detroit Tigers.
Did you know when Fred McGriff was the Home Run Champion with the San Diego Padres in 1992, he was their first player in franchise history to lead the league in home runs? Trivia: Who was the next Friar to lead the senior circuit? [Answer]
Did you know that Fred McGriff was the first Tampa Bay Devil Rays player to drive in 100-or-more runs in a single season? In 1999, McGriff finished the year with 104 runs batted in, a franchise first, and a year later he did it again, finishing with 106 RBI, their first two-time 100-RBI player. The same year (1999) McGriff made Rays history, he also hit 32 home runs, their first player to reach the 30-homer plateau, along with Jose Canseco, who led the club with 34 homers.
