Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"The Twins knew (Joe) Nathan was good, but even they were taken aback by his domination. 'We knew he could finish games for us,' said one Minnesota scout, 'but we did not know he would save 44 games. That was not in my report.'" - Sportswriter Henry Schulman in the San Francisco Chronicle (06/14/2005)

Joe Nathan played shortstop in college (two-time Academic All-American), switched to pitching in the minors, making his way to the majors with the San Francisco Giants as a starting pitcher (1999-2000, 12-6 record). Sent to the bullpen in 2003, he showed he could be a setup guy as well, appearing in 78 games, winning 12, losing 4, holding the lead 19 times. Traded away the following year, the Twins only saw a closer, and Nathan once again proved he could play that position as well, averaging 32.5 saves a season in Minnesota, 260 total saves with the Twins - a franchise record for most saves, surpassing Rick Aguilera (254). [MLB.com Sortable Twins' Stats]

Joe Nathan also made a little Twins history in 2009, during his 47-save season, setting a new also still-standing single season record in Minnesota for saves, held previously by Eddie Guardado, who had 45 saves in 2002! [MLB.com Sortable Twins' Stats]

Did you know that Joe Nathan, during his time as a closer (2004 through 2014), saved 375 games, the most by any pitcher during that same timeframe? Twirlers with 300-or-more total saves, across that identical era, were; Mariano Rivera (369 saves), Francisco Rodriguez (346 saves), Jonathan Papelbon (325 saves), and Francisco Cordero (304 saves).

Did you know that Joe Nathan has 377 career saves, currently #7 on the Top 1,000, and his 376 saves in the American League is the second most, behind hall of famer Mariano Rivera (652)?
