Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"Like many men whose lives had been spent in the secure, innocent confines of professional baseball, (Johnny) Neun was blessed with the most wonderful of afflictions—terminal adolescence. He'd walk half naked, dragging a fungo bat, through the coaches' locker room, regaling the Brewers' minor league instructors and managers with stories of how he helped make a first baseman out of a third baseman named Moose Skowron and how Ty Cobb used to tell rookies, 'You, kid. You better invest in Coca-Cola. That stock's better than land.'" - Author David Lamb in Stolen Season: A Journey Through America and Baseball's Minor Leagues (David Lamb, Random House, 03/20/1991)

Ty Cobb once held the Detroit Tigers record for stolen bases in a game with four, doing it several times in his career, the last instance occurring on August 10, 1924. On July 9, 1927, Johnny Neun stole five bags in a game at Navin Field, versus the New York Yankees, breaking the mark held by The Georgia peach and setting a new Tiger record for stolen bases in a game that remains intact, and not yet duplicated in Detroit, through today!

Did you know that Johnny Neun is one of only two first baseman in baseball history to turn an unassisted triple play? On May 31, 1927, Neun caught a line drive off the bat of Homer Summa (out #1), reached forward and tagged Charlie Jamieson (out #2) who was advancing from first to second, then Johnny literally trotted over to second and touched the base, recording the final out of the inning as Glen Myatt (out #3) had advanced from second and was rounding third. A teammate, Ed Wells, recalled the historic play, "It went right into his glove. All he had to do was touch Jamieson. Two out. Then the man who was on second, Myatt, was rounding third. Neun trots down to second and touches the base. You could hear him all over the park, 'Triple play unassisted! Triple play unassisted!'"

Johnny Neun spent four years in the American League, and never hit a home run. The first year he played in the National League, Johnny hit two homers, the first off Larry French on May 1, 1930, and the second off Ray Phelps on July 9, 1930. The second shot was his last, but memorable nonetheless, as it was an inside the park home run.
