Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"My two favorite players when I was real young, I liked Wade Boggs. He was the first Yankee I really truly liked watching. As I was getting older, Derek Jeter was the guy I kind of tried to follow on and off the field." - Panik, Joe. Interview with Joe Panik. Randolph, Josh. MiLB Staff Writer. 28 June 2011.

Joseph Matthew Panik was a Major League Baseball player with the San Francisco Giants (20142019), New York Mets (2019), Toronto Blue Jays (20202021), and Miami Marlins (2021). When Joe, his nickname, made his big league debut on May 22, 2014, he became the first John Jay High School (Hopewell Junction, NY) graduate to play in the majors!

Despite getting called-up to the majors in late-May, playing in one game, then getting sent back down to the minors for another month, Joe Panik ended the year (2014) with the highest batting average and on-base percentage amongst National League rookies.

Joe Panik had a series of injuries that shortened his sophomore season (2015), but at the time he was added to the disabled list, he had the fifth most hits in the National League, the seventh most doubles, and the eighth best batting average!

Joe Panik struggled again with injuries in 2016, a groin issue and concussion symptoms after getting hit on the head by a pitch, but ended the year with only 47 strikeouts. Examined alongside his 526 plate appearances, and it gives Panik a 11.19 plate appearance per strikeout ratio, making him the most difficult player to strikeout across the entire major leagues during the season!

Joe Panik hit a solo home run on Opening Day, March 29, 2018. The Giants won 1-0. The following day (March 30, 2018), Joe Panik hit another solo home run, and the Giants won again, the score was 1-0. When Joe Panik started the April 3, 2018, game with yet another solo homer, the Giants became the first team whose first three runs scored during any season in history, were solo homers by the same player! Joe Panik had more strikeouts (47) in 2019, then he had in 2016, and fewer plate appearances (491), but his 10.45 plate appearances per strikeout ratio once again made him the most difficult player to strike out in the senior circuit!

Joe Panik was part of a double play that many consider one of the greatest in World Series history. Sports Illustrated (Martell, Marty. 20 May 2022), wrote, "The highlight of Panik's career came in Game 7 of the World Series against the Royals. With Lorenzo Cain on first base with nobody out In the third inning and the score tied 2–2, Eric Hosmer hit a ground ball up the middle. Diving to his right, Panik snagged the grounder and flipped with his glove to (Brandon) Crawford, who fired to first for what was eventually ruled a double play after a replay review. Had the ball gone through, Cain would've advanced to third and given Kansas City runners on the corners with nobody out and a chance to break the game open. Instead, the next batter, Billy Butler, stepped to the plate with nobody on and two outs. He grounded out to short to end the inning. Madison Bumgarner came out of the bullpen to start the fifth and pitched five scoreless innings on two days’ rest to secure the Giants’ third World Series title in five years."

Did you know that during the games played at Coors Field in late 2017, Joe Panik collected twelve hits — a Giants franchise record for most hits in a three games series? The record setting performance included three hits on September 4, 2017, four hits on September 5, 2017, and five hits on September 6, 2017.
