Joe Pepitone was born on Wednesday, October 9, 1940, in Brooklyn, New York. Pepitone was 21 years old when he broke into the big leagues on April 10, 1962, with the New York Yankees. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Joe Pepitone baseball stats page.
"The public airing of Pepitone's difficulties led many to reflect on the tragedy of a great talent gone to waste. 'Joe Pepitone should have been a $100,000 ballplayer,' said Ted Williams, then managing for the Washington Senators. 'All of this was theatre for Joe," said Yankee pitcher Steve Hamilton, 'but his attention span was so short. When he could bear down and play baseball, he was great, but then his mind wandered.'" - Ryczek, William J. Author. The Yankees in the Early 1960s. McFarland & Company. 20 September 2007. Page 7.

Did you know that Joe Pepitone tied the major league record for home runs in an inning (2) on May 23, 1962? A feat tracked on baseball history since 1999, and one previously matched only once in Yankees history before Pepitone. Do you know who it was? Clue: He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1955. [Answer]
Did you know that Joe Pepitone was a three-time All-Star (1963, 1964, 1965) first-baseman? Two other Bronx Bombers, Bill Skowron (1957-1961) and Lou Gehrig (1933-1938), went to three-or-more Midsummer Classics as a first baseman.
Did you know that Joe Pepitone led all American League first baseman in fielding percentage (1965, 1966, 1969), range factor (1965, 1966, 1969), putouts (1964, 1969), assists (1964), double plays (1964), and games played (1964)? In '65 Rawlings recognized Pepitone's defensive skill and awarded him the Gold Glove, the first time a New York Yankee first baseman had received the honor! Joe won again in 1966, then a third time in 1969, the most in Yankees history until 1988, when Don Mattingly won his fourth at first, setting a still-standing record (7 total) in New York.
Joe Pepitone appears in hundreds of books in the Baseball Almanac research library. He was described as: a Ferrari, a free spirit, a playboy, blunt, cocky, dangerous, flashy, passionate, and unpredictable — just to name a few descriptions. His off-the-field "adventures" were nothing short of Hollywood movies, and he was fined enough times for various activities, an entire book could be written about those instances alone. Talented enough to make six-figure contracts, he never made more than $35,000 annually, and left the majors to play in Japan with the Tokyo Yakult Atoms (two-years / $70,000), but quit after fourteen games. On Monday, March 13, 2023, Joe Pepitone passed away in Kansas City, Missouri. He was 82 years old.
