Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"Odalis Perez did two things he never did before. The Los Angeles (Dodgers) left-hander hit his first major league homer and held the Diamondbacks scoreless Wednesday night (August 28, 2002), winning 1-0 in his first career win against Arizona. The last pitcher to homer in a 1-0 game was also a Dodger - Bob Welch did it June 17, 1983, against Cincinnati (Reds). Both homers came at Dodger Stadium." - The Daily Reporter. Odalis Perez made his Major League debut on September 1, 1998, appeared in ten games during the month (all in relief), and finished with one loss, five holds and a 4.22 ERA. The Atlanta Braves kept Odalis on the post-season roster, and he was called in from the bullpen during Game 2 of the 1998 National League Division Series, in the tenth inning, and faced one batter (Jeff Blauser), who grounded into a double play. In the bottom of the tenth, Chipper Jones hit a walk-off single and Perez received the victory — the first pitcher in baseball history whose first big league win came during a postseason game.

On June 17, 1983, Bob Welch, while pitching for the Los Angeles Dodgers, homered and won the game with a score of 1-0 — his home run accounting for the only run that day. Why mention this here? Odalis Perez, on August 28, 2002, was the next pitcher in baseball history to accomplish the same feat!

On March 30, 2008, the first game in Nationals Park (Washington Nationals) was played, Odalis Perez was the first starting pitcher, he struck out the first batter he faced (Kelly Johnson), and surrendered the first home run — to Chipper Jones! Perez did not figure in the decision, Nats 3 vs Braves 2.
