Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"Perry confessed in his book, Me and the Spitter, that he doctored the ball with a variety of substances including saliva, slippery elm, K-Y Jelly, baby oil and Vaseline. Although he rarely threw it, he would go through a herky-jerky pitching ritual where he would touch the back of his hair, the bill of his cap, belt buckle, shin, and sleeve before throwing a pitch. Gene Mauch, one of the opposing managers that he frustrated said, 'He should be in the Hall of Fame with a tube of K-Y Jelly attached to his plaque." - Corcoran, Dennis. Author. Induction Day at Cooperstown: A History of the Baseball Hall of Fame Ceremony. McFarland Publishing. 3 November 2010. Page 166. [Gaylord Perry Quotes]

Gaylord Perry won two Cy Young Awards, the first with the 1972 Cleveland Indians (in the American League) and the second with the 1978 San Diego Padres (in the National League) — this unique pairing made Gaylord the first pitcher to win a Cy Young Award from each league! Four years before his first, he no-hit the world champs:

Gaylord Perry No-Hitter (Box Score: September 17, 1968)

It was not a time anyone would expect to see a home team no-hitter when Gaylord Perry took the mound on Tuesday September 17 at Candlestick Park to face the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cards, after all, were the defending world champions, and on their way to another National League pennant. And the redoubtable Bob Gibson was on the hill for the Redbirds, and Gibson was carrying a 21-7 record.

Gibson was a lot more likely to pitch a no-hitter, which he did threw years later. But this night belonged to Perry, who took a 14-14 record into the clash for the second place Giants. With the Giants trailing the Cards by 12 games, a wee crowd of 9,546 was on hand.

Neither Perry nor Gibson proved disappointing. For his part, Gibson gave up just four hits and struck out 10, allowing only a one-out first inning home run to left by Ron Hunt for the game's only run.

Perry was even tougher. Using an over-powering fastball and a devastating sinker, which the Cards said was really a spitter, the 30-year-old chucker mowed down St. Louis without a hit. He struck out nine and walked two with only two fly balls hit to the outfield and no balls hit hard to anywhere.

In the first inning, Bobby Tolan struck out, Curt Flood grounded out to short and Roger Maris bounced out to first for the Cardinals. Perry allowed his first baserunner in the second when he walked Mike Shannon with two outs. Phil Gagliano popped out to second to end the inning.

That began a streak in which Perry retired 18 batters in a row. He struck out Dal Maxvill and Gibson leading off the third, and then got Tolan to end the inning on a ground out to short.

The Cards posed no threat until the sixth when Maxvill hit a semi-hard bouncer up the middle. Perry cut it off, and threw to first for the out. Gibson flew out to center, but Tolan bid for a hit with a hard bouncer in the hole between first and second. Willie McCovey raced over to make the stop, and threw to first where Perry took the throw just beating the speedy Tolan to the bag.

Perry, who had gone into the seventh inning with a no-hitter against the Chicago Cubs three weeks earlier, moved through the seventh and into the eighth with no trouble. Tim McCarver was called out on strikes and Shannon popped out to second to start the eighth. Perry then walked Gagliano, but Johnny Edwards, batting for Maxvill, struck out.

In the ninth, hard-hitting base-stealing specialist Lou Brock pinch-hit and slashed a high chopper over Perry's head. Shortstop Hal Lanier dashed in and threw out Brock at first. Next came Tolan, and he hit an easy grounder to Hunt at second. That left it up to Flood. After fouling off a 1-2 pitch, Flood watched a third strike go by.

A brilliant pitching duel between two masterful pitchers was over. Perry went on to post a 16-15 record, Gibson went on to win the Cy Young and the Cardinals went on to lost to the Detroit Tigers in seven games in the World Series.

In 1970, Gaylord Perry did not win the Cy Young Award, but his brother Jim Perry did, with the 1970 Minnesota Twins. The Perry brothers were the first (and to date) the only brothers in Major League history to both win a Cy Young Award. Let's take a look at some additional Gaylord Perry facts, starting with this Hall of Fame plaque at Cooperstown:

6 - Gaylord Perry hit six career home runs, but none more famous than his first which became an often told anecdote due to a comment made by Alvin Dark years earlier. Early in Perry's career, Dark said, "They'll put a man on the moon before he hits a home run," and on July 20, 1969, shortly after the Apollo 11 spacecraft carrying Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon, Perry hit the first home run of his career. In the bottom of the third inning, Claude Osteen pitching, Perry went deep with two out and the bases empty to prove Dark was in fact correct.

36 - Gaylord Perry spent his first ten years in San Francisco, winning 134 games for the Giants, posting a 2.96 ERA, striking out 1,606 hitters, and recording 21 shutouts. It took him a bit to get settled on his #36, but once he did it stuck and the Giants retired it for him on July 23, 2005.

39 - Gaylord Perry was 39-years-young, two weeks shy of his 40th birthday, when he struck out the 3,000 hitter in his career. Joe Simpson put his name alongside Gaylord in the 3,000 Strikeouts Club, the date was October 1, 1978, and Perry was only the third to enter this elite set of pitchers at the time behind Walter Johnson and Bob Gibson.

97 - Gaylord Perry was ranked ninety-seventh on The Sporting News list of the 100 Greatest Baseball Players in Major League history. Behind him, #98 Dennis Eckersley, #99 Paul Molitor and #100 Early Wynn.

300 - Gaylord Perry joined the 300 Wins Club on May 6, 1982, a complete game 7-3 historic win over the New York Yankees. Gaylord was the first in the elite set of 300-win pitchers since Early Wynn joined on July 13, 1963.

Gaylord Perry finished his career with three-hundred fourteen wins. His brother, Jim Perry, finished with two-hundred fifteen career wins. Their combined total of 529 was the most in Major League history until 1987 (see baseball card above). The Niekro brothers tied, then passed the Perry brothers, finishing with ten more wins (Phil Niekro [318] and Joe Niekro [221]) — the sets remain #1 and #2 still to this date. On December 1, 2022, at approximately 5:00 am. Gaylord Perry passed away at his home in Gaffney, South Carolina. He was 84 years old.
