Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"(Dan) Petry went 8-4 and registered a 1.94 ERA, pitching an unheard of 111.1 innings his senior year (at El Dorado High School). Petry's 149 strikeouts remains the school record by a longshot. When he wasn't pitching, Petry was the team's leading hitter. At the time, his velocity was about average by major league standards (90 MPH) but Petry was very polished and had the makings of an excellent slider. The kid knew how to pitch and had first-rate character to boot. He was reserved, but a great competitor and a likable teammate from his high school days... Petry was one of the game's best starting pitchers in the early 1980s. He'd win 10 games in the strike-shortened 1981 season, the proceed to win 15, 19, 18, and 15 over the ensuing years. For most teams, Dan Petry would have been the ace. And he was probably the Tigers' most reliable and consistent starter in the early 1980." - Lajoie, Bill. Author. Character Is Not a Statistic: the Legacy and Wisdom of Baseball's Godfather Scout Bill Lajoie. Xlibris Publishing. 21 January 2010. Page 77.
