Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"With Derrek Lee, (Juan) Encarnacion and Pudge (Rodriguez) gone, it might affect us going from first to third. As a team, collectively, I guess you could say team speed is down from last year. But smart base running can make up for it." - Juan Pierre in The Miami Herald (March 1, 2004)

Juan D'Vaughn Pierre was a Major League Baseball player with the Colorado Rockies (2000-2002), Florida Marlins (2003-2005), Chicago Cubs (2006), Los Angeles Dodgers (2007-2009), Chicago White Sox (2010-2011), Philadelphia Phillies (2012), and Miami Marlins (2013).

Juan was originally drafted in 1995, by the Seattle Mariners, while in high school! The following year, he was drafted again (1996 Draft), this time by the Rockies, while he was attending Galveston College, but he refused to sign. After transferring to the University of South Alabama in 1998, he was was drafted a third time, by Colorado again. Two years later, he made his big league debut and became the first Alexandria High School graduate to play in the majors!

J.P., his nickname, had a 200-hit season in 2001—his first full season in Colorado! That year, Pierre also led the National League in stolen bases (46), becoming the first lefty in Rockies' history to lead the league. Do you know what right-handed hitter preceded Pierre in 1996? [Answer]

J.P. had his second 200-hit season in 2003, after being traded, and he became the first Marlins player to ever record 200 hits in a single season! Pierre had appeared in all 162 games that year with Florida, joining former Marlin Jeff Conine (1993) and Derrek Lee (2002) in the team record book.

J.P. had a league league 221 hits in 2004, the most hits in any season in Marlins franchise history — through today! Pierre, once again, played in all 162 games with Florida, the first Marlins player to ever appear in all 162 single season games more than once! A year later, J.P. proved he too was an "Ironman," appearing in all 162 games a third consecutive season!

Did you know that when J.P. stole his 100th base with the Dodgers on July 29, 2008, he became the fourth player in baseball history to steal at least 100 bases with three different baseball teams, joining Tommy Harper, Brett Butler, and Otis Nixon? Pierre finished his career with 614 stolen bases, only the 18th player in Major League history to reach 600-career steals. [Top 1,000 Career Leaders for Stolen Bases]
