Horacio Piña was a Major League Baseball player who pitched for the Cleveland Indians (1968/a>–1969/a>), Washington Senators ( 1970- 1971), Texas Rangers (1972), Oakland Athletics (1973), Chicago Cubs (1974), California Angels (1974), and Philadelphia Phillies (1978). Did you know that when Pina won a World Series championship with the 1973 A's, he became the first Mexican-born player to be on a World Series winning team?

The Washington Senators relocated after the 1971 season, and became the current-day Texas Rangers. When Horacio saved fifteen games in 1972, he became the Rangers record holder for most games saved in a season in Texas. Do you know who tied his record in 1977? [Answer]

In 1988, the Salón de la Fama del Béisbol de México (Mexican Baseball Hall of Fame) inducted Horacia Pina into their hall of fame. His biography included:

THE FIRST MEXICAN TO WIN A WORLD SERIES GAME

Since he was a teenager, he showed his quality as a pitcher in youth and amateur tournaments in his native Coahuila, reaping important triumphs. He started with Puebla and later managed to reach the Major Leagues, playing with various clubs.

In 1973 he went to the World Series pitching for the Oakland Athletics against the New York Mets, and his team won the Fall Classic in seven games. He was later signed with Chicago Cubs, California Angels and Philadelphia Phillies.

His name appears in the record books of the most important baseball circuits in our country. In the Mexican Baseball League, he was the leader in ERA in 1977 with Aguascalientes, winning 21 games and losing four, with 1.94 earned runs allowed.

He had 100 wins to 68 losses in the Summer League, plus 24 saves, a no-hitter against Ciudad Juárez in 1975, and a sensational perfect game against the Red Devils in July 1978.

During his career in the Mexican Baseball League he averaged a stupendous 2.35 ERA. In the Mexican Pacific League, he contributed to the success of the victorious team Tomateros de Culiacán.
