His playing career stretched from 1913 to 1933, all of it in the minor leagues except for 2 seasons with the Pirates. Jake has had 15 seasons of managing minor league teams, winning 2 pennants during that time. He's been the first base coach for the Dodgers since '48 under 3 different managers, (Leo) Durocher, (Burt) Shotton and (Chuck) Dressen. Jake was a playing-manager from '29 to '33." - Topps Baseball. Jake Pitler served in the United States Army during World War I, then returned to baseball, playing in semi-professional leagues for several years. He began coaching in 1928, managing in the minors in 1929, then worked with the Brooklyn Dodgers in many coaching-related positions until he retired, in 1957.
