"Listening to Jay Powell's fastball pop a catcher's mitt, or watching hitters swing at his pitch after pitch without making contact during batting practice, you wonder: How long can they keep this guy on the farm? 'If he gets his job done this spring, there's definitely going to be a place for him on a major leaguepitching staff,' Marlins manager Rene Lachemann said." - Staff Writer David O'Brien in The Sun Sentinel (02/26/1996, Powell Pitching Well, But List Is Long, Full Story)

Jay Powell Stats by Baseball Almanac |
James Willard Powell was a Major League Baseball player who pitched for the Florida Marlins (1995-1998), Houston Astros (1998-2001), Colorado Rockies (2001), Texas Rangers (2002-2004), and Atlanta Braves (2005). Jay, his nickname, was the winning pitching of Game 7 during the 1997 World Series!
Jay Powell is part of an elite set of pitchers in Major League history whose career on the mound spanned at least ten seasons and NEVER once included a losing record! The other aces: Spud Chandler (11 seasons / 109 wins), Dizzy Dean (12 seasons / 150 wins), Dave Foutz (11 seasons / 147 wins), Joe McGinnity (10 seasons / 246 wins), Andy Pettitte (18 seasons 256 wins), Deacon Phillippe (13 seasons / 189 wins), Babe Ruth (10 seasons / 94 wins), and Urban Shocker (13 seasons / 187 wins).
On October 26, 1997, Jay Powell was called in from the bullpen during Game 7 of the 1997 World Series. The score was tied 2-2 in the eleventh inning and Powell walked Matt Williams, but made it out of the inning after Sandy Alomar, Jr. grounded out and Jim Thome grounded into a double play. The Florida Marlins rallied in the bottom of the bottom of the inning, Craig Counsell scored the winning run, the franchise won their first championship, and Jay was the winning pitcher.
Did you know that Jay Powell was the fifth Mississippi State University Bulldog ever drafted in the first round of the Major League Baseball draft? Those who came before Powell were Del Unser (1966 Draft / 1st round / 18th overall), Will Clark (1985 Draft / 1st round / 2nd overall), Rafael Palmeiro (1985 Draft / 1st round / 22nd overall) and B.J. Wallace (1992 Draft / 1st round / 3rd overall).
