Daniel Raymond Quisenberry was a Major League Baseball player with the Kansas City Royals (1979-1988), St. Louis Cardinals (1988-1989), and San Francisco Giants (1990). Did you know that Dan, his nickname, was the first pitcher in baseball history to record forty-or-more saves in a season? Quiz had forty-five saves in 1983, easily breaking the record mark of thirty-eight set by John Hiller in 1973. When Q followed with 44 saves in 1984, he became the first and only pitcher with two 40+ save seasons in a career until Jeff Reardon tied him in 1988.

Did you know that Dan Quisenberry is the only pitcher in Major League history to take the mound more than six-hundred times in his career, and throw less than five wild pitches? We guarantee you don't know who the next closest pitcher is... (Answer).

Dan Quisenberry pitched at Costa Mesa High School (graduated in 1971), played briefly at Orange Coast Junior College, transferred to Division III La Verne College, posted a 19-7 record his senior year (1975), and was an undrafted free agent. Four short years later that undrafted free agent burst into the big leagues, set a new Major League saves record (details above), was the only pitcher from either team to appear in every game of the 1980 World Series, won a ring in the 1985 World Series, and in 1998 he was inducted into Kansas City Royals Hall of Fame.

Mound Memories

3x A.L. All-Star (1982, 1983, 1984)

3x A.L. Games Pitched Leader (1980, 1983, 1985)

5x A.L. Rolaids Relief Man Award Winner (1980, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985)

5x A.L. Saves Leader (1980, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985)

Hall of Fame closer Rollie Fingers was the American League career / all-time saves leader until Dan Quisenberry recorded his 234th save on May 24, 1987, surpassing Fingers' mark of 233. Quiz held the American League record himself until his total of 238 was broken by Jeff Reardon.
