Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"I just have a chip on my shoulder. I want to get here and get my stuff right and show people I can play. I think every year you gotta go out there and have something to prove, because you like to compete. I think every player during the offseason prepares to have a great season. We love to compete, and it doesn't matter what you did last year and you've got to prove yourself. It doesn't matter who you are. You have to go out there and keep showing what you can do." - Ramirez, Manny. Chastain, Bill. MLB Staff Writer. Manny: I've got a chip on my shoulder. 17 February 2011.

Manny Ramirez is one of only five ballplayers (Jimmie Foxx, Mark McGwire, Ken Griffey, Jr. & Rafael Palmeiro are the other four) in Major League history to hit at least two-hundred career home runs with two different ball clubs. Join Baseball Almanac as we take a look at some additional numbers of interest as they relate to one of the most polarizing sluggers in Major League history:

2 - Manny Ramirez finished second amongst American League rookies in hits, doubles, home runs, and RBI, in 1994. When the Baseball Writers voted for the Rookie of the Year, Ramirez finished second. Do you remember who did win the Rookie of the Year Award in 1994? [Answer]

3 - Manny Ramirez hit 41 home runs in 2001, 43 home runs in 2004, and 45 home runs in 2005, just the second player in Red Sox history with three 40-homer seasons. Who was first? [Answer]

4 - Manny Ramirez hit a home run in the third inning of the game played on April 22, 2007. J.D. Drew, Mike Lowell & Jason Varitek joined him and the four consecutive home runs during the same inning tied the American League mark which had occurred only twice before in league history.

8 - Manny Ramirez won eight Silver Slugger Awards in the outfield, the most by any American League outfielder ever, the second most in history behind Barry Bonds who had twelve, but Manny also had one at the designated hitter position in 2002 (for nine total).

19 - Manny Ramirez played nineteen years in the big leagues and when he took off his cleats, April 6, 2011, he appeared in the top fifty on several significant hitting charts: Grand Slams (3rd All-Time), Slugging Average (9th All-Time), Intentional Bases on Balls (11th All-Time), Extra Base Hits (13th All-Time), Home Runs (14th All-Time), RBIs (18th All-Time), Doubles (24th All-Time), Total Bases (26th All-Time) and On-Base Percentage (32nd All-Time).

23 - Manny Ramirez was the first Cleveland Indians right-handed hitter to record a 30-homer / 100-RBI season at the age of 23 (or younger), collecting 107 RBI and hammering 31 homers in 1995. Do you know what lefty did it twice, in 1934 and 1936, before Ramirez? [Answer]

28 - Manny Ramirez was intentionally walked twenty-eight times in 2003, the most by right-handed hitter in Red Sox history. What lefty holds the all-time record in Boston, getting intentionally walked 29 times in 1946, then tying their own record (29 IBB) in 1947, then setting the still-standing club record of 33 IBB in 1957? [Answer]

29 - Manny Ramirez has hit twelve home runs in Division Series games, thirteen home runs in League Championship Series games, and four home runs in World Series games — these twenty-nine combined post-season home runs are the most by any player in Major League history!

41 - Manny Ramirez hit forty-one home runs in 2001, his first season with the Red Sox. Only two players in franchise history hit 40-or-more homers during their first season in Boston, Dick Stuart preceded Ramirez in 1973, who was first? Clue: It was in 1936. [Answer]

78 - Manny Ramirez has collected thirty-two RBIs in Division Series games, thirty RBIs in League Championship Series games, and fourteen RBIs in World Series games — these seventy-eight combined post-season RBIs are the most by any player in Major League history.

148 - Manny Ramirez drove in 165 runs in 1999, shattering the all-time Indians franchise record for most RBI in a single season, held by Hal Trosky, a lefty-slugger who had 162 RBI in 1936. What righty-slugger held the club record, 148 RBI, which was also broken by Ramirez? [Answer]

2004 - Manny Ramirez hit a home run during the first inning of the 2004 All-Star Game, his only homer during a Midsummer Classic. During that same inning, Derek Jeter hit a single, Ichiro Suzuki hit a double and Ivan Rodriguez hit a triple; this foursome were the first to "hit for the cycle" during the same inning of an All-Star Game.

The Sporting News, on September 24, 2009, announced their Team of the Decade which was composed of Joe Mauer (catcher), Albert Pujols (first base), Jeff Kent (second base), Derek Jeter (shortstop), Alex Rodriguez (third base), Barry Bonds (outfield), Ichiro Suzuki (outfield), Manny Ramirez (outfield), David Ortiz (designated hitter), Randy Johnson (starting pitcher), Mariano Rivera (closer) and Joe Torre (manager).
