Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"The World's Fastest Baseball Human competition. We would start on a baseball field, stopwatches in hand. Then we'd stand back and let our contestants motor -- home to first, first to third, second to home. They would sprint out triples, simulate inside-the-parkers, see who takes the fewest milliseconds to lead off first base and steal second. Then we'd move the survivors into the Olympic stadium for our spectacular grand finale -- the AL-versus-NL relay race. 'In the 4-by-100, I'd have Juan Pierre run the first lap,' said Brewers coach Rich Donnelly. 'I'd have Jose Reyes run the second lap. I'd have Jimmy Rollins run the third lap. And then I'd finish it off with Willy Taveras. Give me that team,' Donnelly laughed, 'and I think we could beat Bulgaria.'" - Stark, Jayson. ESPN Senior Writer. Who's the fastest?. 24 August 2005.

José Bernabénis Reyes was a Major League Baseball player with the New York Mets (2003-2011), Miami Marlins (2012), Toronto Blue Jays (2013-2015), Colorado Rockies (2015), and New York Mets (2016-2018). Did you know that after being called-up to the majors, Jose Reyes set a Mets rookie record for hits in a month with 39 in August 2003? Do you know whose record (37 hits in June 2000) he broke? [Answer]

Did you know that when Jose Reyes homered from both sides of the plate in the same game on August 28, 2003, he became the youngest (20 years, 78 days old) player in Major League Baseball history to accomplish the feat?

Did you know that Jose Reyes broke the Mets record in 2005 (161 games), set by Buddy Harrelson in 1970 (156 games), for most games played at shortstop during a single season? The only Mets shortstop since Reyes to reach 160-or-more games played in a season at short, is Jose Reyes, who played in 160 games at shortstop in 2007!

Did you know that when Jose Reyes stole 60 bases in 2005, he became the first Mets player to lead the National League in stolen bases? A year later, Reyes stole 64 bases, led the senior circuit again, and became the first Mets player to ever have consecutive seasons with sixty or more stolen bags. Just to make sure his record was safe, Reyes stole a still-standing franchise record 78 bags in 2007, leading the league a third consecutive season!

Did you know that when Jose Reyes hit a bunt single in his first at bat in the first inning of the final game of the year in 2011 (box), he asked his manager to remove him from the game, ending the year with a .337 batting average, two points ahead of Ryan Braun of the Milwaukee Brewers in the race for the National League batting title? Ryan Braun went 0–4 that day to finish at .332, making Reyes the first Met in franchise history to win a batting championship.

Did you know that when Jose Reyes hit the ninth leadoff home run of his career on July 12, 2007, against Cincinnati Reds pitcher Bronson Arroyo, he set a new New York Mets record for leadoff home runs in a career?

Did you know that when Jose Reyes stole three bases in a game on August 22, 2007, his sixty-fifth, -sixth and -seventh of the season, he set a new New York Mets record for most stolen bases in a single season (previously held by Roger Cedeno)?

Mookie Wilson stole two-hundred eighty-one bases in a New York Mets uniform, the most in franchise history (breaking the mark of two-hundred two once held by Howard Johnson). On September 10, 2008, Reyes broke Mookie's team record for stolen bases when he swiped his 282nd bag in the third inning of a game against the Washington Nationals. After stealing second, Reyes stole third and scored the go-ahead run on a single by David Wright.

When Jose Reyes changed uniforms, he did not stop making history. In fact, during the first game ever played at Marlins Park (on April 4, 2012), by the newly renamed Miami Marlins (formerly known as the Florida Marlins), Reyes had the first hit in the park, a single against Kyle Lohse of the St. Louis Cardinals in the seventh inning, which broke up a no-hitter!
