Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"You certainly don't sit in the locker room, and be like, 'Hey, are you (Nick Markakis) the face of the franchise or is it me?’ It's kind of funny that you guys [the media] talk that way, because we don't look at it that way. You're trying to be the best player on the field and lead by example and lead by hopefully playing well and that sort of thing. I did try to take that seriously." - Roberts, Brian. Brian Roberts, Fred Manfra set for 'surreal' induction into Orioles Hall of Fame. Schmuck, Peter. Baltimore Sun Staff Writer. 10 August 2018.

In 1973, Rich Coggins set an Orioles rookie record for most consecutive games (15) with a hit. In 1977, Eddie Murray tied Coggins. Why did Baseball Almanac mention their record "on the back" of Brian Roberts' baseball card? He hit safely on June 22, 2001, then had at least one hit in 15-straight games himself, tying the rookie record.

In 2004, Brian Roberts hit 50 doubles, the most doubles by a switch-hitter in American League history. Four years later, Roberts broke his own record, collecting 51 doubles. Then, in 2009, Brian had 56 doubles, the most doubles in Major League history by a switch-hitter! Do you know what switch-hitter tied Roberts' record in 2017? [Answer]

In 2005, Brian Roberts received the Most Valuable Oriole Award at the end of the season. Maybe, it was because he won the American League Player of the Week, April 11-17, 2004 (.500 batting average, 9 runs scored, 2 home runs, 8 RBI and 6 stolen bases)? Maybe, it was because he won the American League Player of the Month Award for April (league leading – slugging average .726, runs scored 21; second – hits 36, triples 3, home runs 8, and stolen bases 10)? Maybe, it was because he at least one hit in 26 of the 27 games played in May (.358 AVG)? Or maybe, it was because at the end of season, Brian Roberts had become the first switch-hitter in baseball history with 45-or-more doubles, 15-or more home runs, and 20-or more stolen bases!

In 2009, Brian Roberts recorded his third career season with 50-or-more doubles; a feat duplicated in baseball history by hall of fame center fielder Tris Speaker (5x), hall of fame right fielder Paul Waner (3x), and hall of fame first baseman Stan Musial (3x).

A long string of various injuries cut the record setting career of Brian Roberts short. But, after just 13 seasons in Baltimore (six complete), he finished — at that time — with the ninth most hits (1,452) by an Oriole, the ninth most bases on balls (581), the seventh most bases on balls (581), the seventh most extra-base hits (478), the sixth most runs scored (810), the sixth most triples (35), the fourth most doubles (343), and the second most stolen bases (278) — in franchise history. When compared to just Orioles second basemen, switch every one of those rankings to first!
