Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"Aside from the national pride that this (Andre Rodger's being called up in 1957) generated not only among baseball fans, but Bahamians in general, what this meant to the Bahamas as a country could not be evaluated in dollars and cents. Every time Andre Rodgers stepped on a field in baseball stadiums across the United States and his name and where he was from was announced, that represented thousands and thousands of dollars in free publicity for the Bahamas." - Sportswriter Oswald T. Brown in The Nassau Guardian (11/21/2003)

Andre Rodgers turned exactly one-hundred double plays in 1963, only the fifth shortstop from the Chicago Cubs to turn 100-or-more double plays in a single season, joining Jimmy Cooney (107 DP, 141 GP, 1926 Cubs), Woody English (107 DP, 144 GP, 1929 Cubs), Roy Smalley (115 DP, 154 GP, 1950 Cubs) and Ernie Banks (105 DP, 154 GP, 1954 Cubs / 102 DP, 154 GP, 1955 Cubs / 100 DP, 154 GP, 1958 Cubs).

Did you know that Kenneth Andre Ian Rodgers was born on December 2, 1934, in Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, the eldest of seven children born to Arnold Percival Rodgers and Carmencita Theresa Baillou, and when Andre appeared in his first big league game, on April 16, 1957, he became the first major leaguer from the Bahamas?
