Ivan Rodriguez was born on Tuesday, November 30, 1971, in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico. Rodriguez was 19 years old when he broke into the big leagues on June 20, 1991, with the Texas Rangers. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Ivan Rodriguez baseball stats page.
"He's the best. Johnny Bench was that one catcher who used to get all that recognition. But Ivan, he's done it batting average-wise, power-wise, and you change your whole offensive scheme when he's the catcher whether you're going to steal a lot because he's dominant in that area. It's very unusual to be a catcher and be that effective both offensively and defensively." - New York Yankees Manager Joe Torre in Baseball Digest (Simon Gonzalez, July 2001)

Ivan Rodriguez Stats by Baseball Almanac |
Pudge holds so many records for catchers it's honestly amazing; on June 17, 2009, he caught his 2,227th game, passing Carlton Fisk who was #1 in all-time games caught in baseball history; in 1996 Pudge hit 44 doubles breaking the mark for most doubles by a catcher set by Mickey Cochrane who had 42 in 1930 AND he had 639 at-bats breaking the mark for most at bats by a catcher set by Johnny Bench who had 621 in 1970.
In 1999, Ivan Rodriguez had arguably his best season and one for the record books. He set a new American League record for home runs in a single season among catchers with 35; he was the first catcher to have more than 30 home runs, 100 runs batted in, and 100 runs scored in Major League history; AND he holds the distinction of being the only catcher in American League history to amass more than 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases in the same season. It was arguably the greatest years of his career, but lets take a year-by-year look at a few additional highlights:
1991: Ivan Rodriguez was 19 years, 7 months when he made his Major League debut, the third youngest player in Texas Rangers history. Pudge caught 88 games in 1991, the second most by a teenaged catcher. On August 30, 1991, Pudge hit his first career home run, off Storm Davis, and became the youngest Ranger ever to hit a home run at nineteen years, nine months. Topps Baseball Cards named Ivan as their catcher on their respective Major League Rookie All-Star teams.
1992: Ivan Rodriguez was the youngest player in the American League and his 116 games caught were the fourth most in history for a catcher, twenty or younger. Pudge was the primary catcher for the Rangers in both 1991 and 1992, and became the only catcher in history to lead his team in games caught at both age nineteen and twenty. After his first full season in the American League behind the plate, Ivan finished third in putouts, second in assists, second in double plays, and first in runners caught stealing. Gold Glove #1 (of 13) was added to the mantle.
1993: Ivan Rodriguez raised his batting average from .260 in 1992 to .273 in 1993. His strikeout total went down from 73 to 70, and his hit total, doubles, triples, home runs and RBIs all increased. Behind the plate he finished third in putouts again, second in assists again, and dropped to fourth in caught stealing percentage, but he still added another Gold Glove to his collection.
1994: Ivan Rodriguez led all American League catchers in batting average, hitting .298, which was also the second highest on the Texas Rangers. His 99 games behind the plate were the most by any catcher in the strike-shortened season. Not content with only earning Gold Gloves, Pudge added his first of seven future Silver Sluggers to his awards cabinet.
1995: Ivan Rodriguez was the Texas Rangers Player of the Year, finishing the season with the highest batting average (.303), the most total bases (221), and the most doubles (32). He once again led all American League catchers in games caught, this time with 127 games behind the plate.
1996: Ivan Rodriguez received votes for the league MVP for the first time in his career, finishing tenth overall, due in part to having the third most doubles in the league, the fourth most at-bats, the seventh most hits, and the twelfth most runs scored. The doubles were not just the third most in the league, but also set a new Major League record for doubles by a catcher in a season, breaking Hall of Famer Mickey Cochrane's record of 42 set sixty-six years earlier.
1997: Ivan Rodriguez made the cover of Sports Illustrated (pictured below), the fourth time a Texas Rangers player was featured on the cover. He led the Rangers in singles and was second in batting average, runs scored, hits, doubles and triples. After three straight years leading the American League in games caught, he slipped to second overall, but still led the league in assists and runners caught stealing percentage.
1998: Ivan Rodriguez had the highest batting average (.321) on the Texas Rangers, eighth best in the American League. Pudge won his first American League Player of the Month Award after setting a team record for hits in April. Pudge the 1,000 career hits plateau on May 11, 1998, and finished the season with exactly forty doubles, the first Major League catcher with two seasons of forty or more doubles.
1999: Ivan Rodriguez set American League record for home runs by a catcher in a season. He finished the season with the highest batting average for a junior circuit catcher since Hall of Famer Bill Dickey hit .332 in 1937. Tied another Hall of Fame catcher, Mickey Cochrane, as the only backstops to ever score 100 runs more than once. Also became the first catcher in Major League history with twenty home runs and twenty stolen bases in one season helping him win the MVP Award, only the ninth different catcher from either league to win an MVP and the first since Thurman Munson won in 1976.
2000: Ivan Rodriguez fractured his right thumb in July, a season ending injury, but had started the season strong, setting a new team record for home runs in the month of April with nine. A mark that has been tied since (but yet to be broken) by Alex Rodriguez (2002), Carl Everett (2003), and Ian Kinsler (2007).
2001: Ivan Rodriguez won his tenth consecutive Rawlings Gold Glove Award and started his ninth consecutive All-Star Game, tying Hall of Famer Johnny Bench in both categories.
2002: Ivan Rodriguez hit .314, his eighth consecutive season with a .300 or higher batting average. A herniated disc affected his play throughout the season, but Pudge chose to play through the season instead of having surgery. It was his last season in Texas, and when he left the Rangers, he was (at that time) the team leader in at-bats (5,656), hits (1,723) and doubles (344). Second in games played (1,479), runs scored (852), total bases (2,768) and triples (28). Third in home runs (215) and RBIs (829).
2003: Ivan Rodriguez hit a home run in his first game as a Florida Marlin then went on to set single-season team records for a catcher with a .297 batting average and 85 runs batted in, truly leading the club to its second World Series Championship.
2004: Ivan Rodriguez was traded back to the American League and named an All-Star Game for the eleventh time in his career, starting for the tenth time, and joining Johnny Bench and Mike Piazza as the only catchers elected to start ten Midsummer Classics. Ivan was the first Tigers player elected to start the All-Star Game since Alan Trammell started at shortstop in 1988, he won the Tiger of the Year Award, and his eleventh Gold Glove (the most by any catcher), the first Tigers player to win the award since Gary Pettis in 1989.
