"You know W.W.J.D., what would Jesus do? Here, it’s what would Scott do? He doesn't argue with the umpires, he runs every single ball out, he makes great plays, he makes routine plays, he gets the runner in when he needs to get him in, he gets the runner over when he needs to get him over. He just plays the game exactly how it should be played. You never second-guess anything he does." - Gomes, Jonny. Investment in Rolen Is Paying Off for the Reds. Kepner, Tyler. New York Times Staff Writer. 1 June 2010.

Scott Bruce Rolen was a Major League Baseball player with the Philadelphia Phillies (1996-2002), St. Louis Cardinals (2002-2007), Toronto Blue Jays (2008-2009), and Cincinnati Reds (2009-2012). When Rolen made his big league debut on August 1, 1996, he became the first former Jasper High School (Jasper, IN) student to play in the majors.
Scott Rolen Rookie Card | 1995 Bowman's Best Baseball Card (#87)
Baseball Almanac Research Library
The Major League Baseball rulebook states, "A player shall be considered a rookie unless he has exceeded any of the following thresholds in a previous season (or seasons): 130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched in the Major Leagues." Why did we mention this here?
Scott Rolen recorded his one-hundred thirtieth at-bat on September 7, 1996, in the bottom of the first inning. In the bottom of the third, Rolen came to the plate, then was hit by a pitch — thrown by Steve Trachsel — that fractured Scott's right arm (ulna bone) and ended his season. A hit by pitch does not count as an at-bat, keeping Rolen a "rookie" in 1997, a year where he hit .283, smashed 21 home runs, drive in 92 runs, walked 76 times, and was named the National League Rookie of the Year, receiving every single possible first place vote, the first rookie in Phillies history to unanimously win the Jackie Robinson Award!
Scott Rolen collected forty-five doubles in 1998, the most in a season ever hit by a Phillies third baseman! He also made several spectacular plays at the hot corner, led all senior circuit third basemen in total chances and putouts, and won his first career Gold Glove Award, tying Brooks Robinson for youngest (23) third baseman in baseball history to receive the honor.
Scott Rolen hit his seventy-second career home run on July 2, 1999, in the first inning, his first and only inside-the-park homer. During that same game, he homered again, during the seventh inning. That combination of home runs made Rolen one-of-three Phillies, during that entire century, with a "regular" home run, and inside-the-park home run, during the same game! Who were the other two? [Answer 1 / Answer 2]
Scott Rolen homered in the top of the seventh inning off Octavio Dotel on April 7, 2000, the first regular season home run hit by any player in Enron Field (Minute Maid Park), home of the Houston Astros. When the season ended, Rawlings awarded Rolen with his second Gold Glove Award, the second third baseman in Phillies history to win at the hot corner more than once. The first, Mike Schmidt.
Scott Rolen hit a career high thirty-four home runs in 2004, and when he hit his thirtieth, he became part of a trio of Cardinals that each had thirty-or-more homers during the same season, a first in franchise history! The other two history making Red Birds were Jim Edmonds (42 HRs) and Albert Pujols (46 HRs).
Scott Rolen hit his fourth career grand slam on April 3, 2006, during an Opening Day game. Only one other player in Cardinals history had a grand slam on Opening Day! Who was it? [Answer]
Scott Rolen won his tenth, and final, Gold Glove Award at the end of the 2010 season. In baseball history, only two other third baseman at that time had more than Rolen, Mike Schmidt (10) and Brooks Robinson (16)!
Scott Rolen finished his career with 2,000+ hits, 1,200+ RBI, 500+ doubles, and 300+ home runs — joining two other third baseman who had also reached those plateaus; George Brett (HOF 1999) and Chipper Jones (HOF 2018). However, it seemed like the Baseball Writers’ Association of America were not impressed, writing his name on only 10.2% of the ballots in 2018. No player in baseball history had ever appeared on fewer than 15% of the ballots during their first year of eligibility, and made it the Hall of Fame via the writer's ballot. However, until Scott Rolen! His path to Cooperstown; 2019 (17.2%), 2020 (35.3%), 2021 (52.9%), 2022 (63.2%), and 2023 (76.3%).
