Amos Rusie Stats by Baseball Almanac |
In 1883, Francis Richter founded The Sporting Life, a weekly magazine devoted to coverage of all sports, with an emphasis on baseball. In 1887, Richter, and other baseball journalists, formed the Base Ball Reporters Association of America, also referred to as the National Base Ball Reporters' Association. And in 1914, Richter wrote the History and Records of Baseball: the American Nation's Chief Sport (Philadelphia: Sporting Life Publishing Co., 1914). In that historic book, Richter selected the greatest players in each position in each decade:
Amos Rusie - on his way to the Hall of Fame - had a challenging sophomore season (1890), leading the National League in games lost (34), wild pitches (36), and bases on balls (289). No pitcher since The Hoosier Thunderbolt has ever walked as many batters in a single season in baseball history! [Bases on Balls Records]
Amos Rusie | National Baseball Hall of Fame Plaque | Class of 1977 (HOF)
In The Evolution of Pitching in Major League Baseball (William F. McNeil, McFarland Publishing, 03/15/2006, Page 41) we found this wonderful biographical passage about Amos Rusie, "One popular theory held that the distance from the mound to the plate was increased to protect batters from Amos Rusie's fastballs. The big 6' 2", 200-pound Hoosier Thunderbolt was baseball's foremost power pitcher during the 1890s, a hard-throwing wild man who intimidated batters, but had no idea where the pitch was going. Over his career, Rusie fanned five men a game, a high number in those days, walked an equal number, and hit more than a few. He was the scourge of the league, feared by most batters with some justification, since he had sent several players to the hospital with enormous headaches. In fact, Hughie Jennings, the feisty field leader of the Baltimore Orioles, lay unconscious in a hospital bed for three days after running into one of Rusie's blazers."
