Juan Samuel Stats by Baseball Almanac |
Did you know that Juan Samuel is the only player in baseball history to have seven-hundred at-bats during their rookie season? In 1932, Billy Herman set a new National League (NL) rookie record when he had 656 at bats, the first NL rookie to eclipse the 650 at-bat plateau. His American League (AL) counterpart was Carl Lind, who had 650 at-bats in 1928. Herman and Lind each lost the Rookie Record for At-Bats in a Season, evolving over the century as games-played schedules evolved, and the current record holders are Juan Samuel and Ichiro Suzuki.
Did you know that only four players, in the entire history of Major League Baseball, have had 700-or-more at bats in a single season? The "leave me in coach" club include: Willie Wilson (705 AB in 1980), Juan Samuel (701 AB in 1984), Ichiro Suzuki (704 AB in 2004), and Jimmy Rollins (716 AB in 2007). Historical Note: There are 14,000+ former big league players who finished their career with less than 700 total at bats.
Juan Samuel, three years after setting the rookie record for at-bats, was the third second baseman in baseball history with 80-or-more extra base hits (XBH) in a single season. Hall of famer Rogers Hornsby set the (impossible to reach) standard, putting together five seasons at second with at least 80 extra base hits (83 XBH in 1921, 102 XBH in 1922, 82 XBH in 1924, 90 XBH in 1925, 92 XBH in 1929). Hall of famer Charlie Gehringer came close in 1929 (77 XBH) and 1930 (78 XBH), before joining Rajah in 1936 (87 XBH).

What do Hack Wilson, Vince DiMaggio and Juan Samuel have in common? They each led the National League in strikeouts four consecutive seasons, the record through today. [Strikeout Records for Hitters / Year by Year Leader for Striking Out]
