Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"It's command. Control is the ability to throw strikes. In the big leagues, everybody has control. Command is the ability to throw quality strikes. And when you add preparation to command, good things will happen." - Schilling, Curt. Right on the Numbers. Frostino, Nino. Author. Trafford Publishing. 31 August 2004. Page 39.

Did you know that only eighteen pitchers in Major League Baseball history have earned a win against all thirty Major League teams? Sportswriter AJ Cassavell once wrote, "Beating one Major League team figures to be difficult enough for a starting pitcher. Beating all 30 of them, however, is nothing short of pitching history." We agree and are pleased to present the I've Beaten Every Major League Team "club" that includes these 18 twirlers: Kevin Brown, A.J. Burnett, Bartolo Colon, Dan Haren, Tim Hudson, Randy Johnson, John Lackey, Al Leiter (who started the "club"), Kyle Lohse, Derek Lowe, Jamie Moyer, Terry Mulholland, Vicente Padilla, Max Scherzer, Curt Schilling, Javier Vazquez, Woody Williams and Barry Zito.

There are less than twenty baseball players who were born in Alaska through today, and Curt Schilling was the first from Alaska to pitch in a big league game. Join Baseball Almanac as we take a look at some additional numbers of interest as they relate to one of the most dominant strikeout artists in Major League Baseball history:

0 - Curt Schilling never won a Cy Young Award, but received votes four times finishing second in 2001 (to Randy Johnsonn), second in 2002 (to Randy Johnson), second in 2004 (to Johan Santana), and he was fourth the first time he was given votes, in 1997 (behind Pedro Martinez, Greg Maddux and Denny Neagle).

2 - Curt Schilling won two strikeout champion, mowing down 319 in 1997 (#1 on Top 25) and mowing down 300 in 1998 (#1 on Top 25). After he hung up his cleats, he had amassed three 300-strikeout seasons (1997, 1998, 2002) and five 200-strikeout seasons (1997, 1998, 2001, 2002, 2004).

3 - Curt Schilling joined the 20-Wins Club twice in the National League (2001 & 2002) and once in the American League (2004). When Schilling went 22-6 in 2001, he, along with Randy Johnson, were the first pitchers in franchise history from the Arizona Diamondbacks to reach the 20-win plateau.

6 - Curt Schilling was a six-time All-Star (1997, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2004), with three different teams, in two different leagues.

7 - Curt Schilling struck out seven consecutive batters on August 26, 1996 - the Philadelphia Phillies team record for consecutive strikeouts in a game. Schill allowed one run in the first inning, struck out eleven total, but lost the game 0-1 (William Van Landingham, Jim Poole and Rod Beck shutout the Phillies, allowing only three hits).

83 - Curt Schilling threw 83 complete games across his big league career. From 1990 through 1999, he threw 57, sixth most in the decade (behind Greg Maddux, 75, Randy Johnson, 65, Jack McDowell, 61, Kevin Brown, 58, and Roger Clemens, 57). In respect to the 83 complete games, he threw 17 four-hitters, 7 three-hitters, 6 two-hitters, and three 1-hitters!

3,116 - Curt Schilling joined the 3,000 Strikeouts Club on August 30, 2006, along with Nick Swisher (who was the batter). When Schilling called it a career, he had 3,116 strikeouts — the 15th most in Major League Baseball history at the time of his retirement. [Top 1,000]

During his first year of eligibility on the National Baseball Hall of Fame Ballot (in 2013), Curt Schilling received 38.8% of the votes, well shy of the 75% needed to be inducted. In 2014, he went down to 29.2%, but then rose steadily for the next seven years; 2015 (39.2%), 2016 (52.3%), 2017 (45.0%), 2018 (51.2%), 2019 (60.9%), 2020 (70.0%), 2021 (71.1%), but was not elected on his final ballot in 2022 (58.6%).
