Did you know that after the season came to an end in 1997, Jason Schmidt stopped wearing #42 since Major League Baseball retired it for Jackie Robinson? Schmidt could have kept the number since he was wearing it before they retired the number, but chose to honor its retirement and switched to #22 the following season. Schmidt will always be the last Pirates player to wear number 42 as a regularly issued number.
Did you know that Jason Schmidt was the fourth Giants twirler to start an All-Star Game (2003), joining Juan Marichal (1965 & 1966), Vide Blue (1978) and Rick Reuschel (1989)? After the Midsummer Classic, Schmidt continued pitching like an All-Star, finishing the year with the senior circuit ERA title (2.34), a league leading winning percentage (.773), and tied for tops in the majors for most shutouts (3)! Despite those numbers, Jason finished second in the Cy Young Award race in 2003 – what closer (55 saves) won? [Answer]
Did you know that when Jason Schmidt finished the 2004 campaign with a career high 251 strikeouts, it was the most by a Giants pitcher during a single season since they relocated to San Francisco (since broken)? The previous record holder "only" had 248 strikeouts in 1963 – who was it? [Answer]
Did you know that Jason Schmidt also finished the year (2004) with a league leading three shutouts, making him the first San Francisco Giants pitcher in history to lead-or-tie the senior circuit in shutouts in back-to-back (2003-2004) seasons?
Did you know that when Jason Schmidt had sixteen strikeouts in a game on June 6, 2006, it tied the Giants franchise record – set 102 years earlier – set by Christy Mathewson on October 3, 1904?
Jason Schmidt struggled with shoulder injuries during his career, and after his third All-Star (2006) appearance, he was never able to fully recover. During his time with the Giants, Schmidt went 78-37, with a 3.36 ERA, and 1,065 strikeouts in 1,069.2 innings of work! In 2011, he was recognized for his contribution when the Giants included Schmidt on the San Francisco Giants Wall of Fame.
