Michael Jack Schmidt was a Major League Baseball player with the Philadelphia Phillies (1972-1989). Did you know that Mike, his nickname, won three Most Valuable Player Awards (1980, 1981, 1986) and finished in the top ten five additional times — the most by any Phillies player in franchise history? Join Baseball Almanac as we take a look at some additional numbers of interest as they relate one of the greatest third baseman in Major League history:

Phillies Centennial Team
The Philadelphia Baseball Wall of Fame is a collection of plaques, mounted on a brick wall in the Ashburn Alley section of Citizens Bank Park. From 1978 to 2003, the Phillies inducted one figure from their franchise history and one notable person from the Philadelphia Athletics (A's) organization each year, with the exception of 1983, when the Phillies inducted their Centennial Team. Their Centennial Team commemorates the best players of the first 100 years in franchise history and Mcgraw made the team which includes: Richie Ashburn (OF), Bob Boone (C), Larry Bowa (SS), Steve Carlton (LHP), Del Ennis (OF), Dallas Green (MGR), Jim Konstanty (RHP), Garry Maddox (OF), Tug McGraw (LHP), Robin Roberts (RHP), Pete Rose (1B), Mike Schmidt (3B) and Manny Trillo (2B).

Mike Schmidt had a nagging rotator cuff injury that plagued him during the later part of his career. In 1989, Schmitty retired suddenly (after 42 games he was hitting .203 with 1 home run), playing in his final game on May 28, 1989, then announcing his retirement the following day (no farewell tour occurred). Later that same year, Mike was named to the 1989 All-Star Game becoming the first retired player in Major League history voted into an All-Star Game.
