Jimmy Sebring was born on Saturday, March 25, 1882, in Liberty, Pennsylvania. Sebring was 20 years old when he broke into the big leagues on September 8, 1902, with the Pittsburgh Pirates. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Jimmy Sebring baseball stats page.
"As baseball's climactic event, the World Series has done more than anything else to magnify home runs in aristocratic currency. Nothing about a World Series dinger is common, even if some players who hit them are. Such was the case with Jimmy Sebring. On October 1, 1903, the 21-year-old Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder (career: 363 games, .261 average, 6 homers) came to bat at Boston's Huntington Avenue grounds in the seventh inning of the first game of the first World Series and - against Cy Young, no less - hit the first Series homer." - Author Mark Ribowsky in The Complete History of the Home Run (Citadel Publishing, 03/01/2003, Page 40)

Jimmy Sebring Stats by Baseball Almanac |
Did you know that Jimmy Sebring hit the first World Series home run in the first World Series played in the first game ever? Lets take a look at that historic moment:
Jimmy Sebring & Cy Young | 2003 Fleer Classic Baseball Card (#931/1500)Baseball Almanac Research Library
In the seventh inning of the 1903 World Series, Game 1, on October 1, 1903, Cy Young on the mound, Sebring launched one over the head of right fielder Buck Freeman who believed the ball was going to roll under the ropes being used to hold the crowd off the field for a ground rule triple.
The ball made a valiant effort, but stopped rolling roughly ten feet from the ropes. By the time Freeman realized his mistake, Sebring was rounding third, and Buck's throw to catcher Lou Criger was done in vain - Sebring had crossed home plate and etched his name in the history books becoming forever known as the first player to hit a home run in the first World Series (and it also happened to be an inside-the park variation).

Jimmy Sebring died of Brights Disease - a historical classification of kidney diseases, first described in 1827 by the English physician Richard Bright, that would be described in modern medicine as acute or chronic nephritis. The term is no longer used, as diseases are now classified according to their more fully understood causes. The Washington Post, on December 23, 1909, printed the following obituary for Jimmy Sebring:
Jimmy Sebring Obituary
Every town in the Tri-State League knew Jimmy Sebring, every city in the National League had admired his skill, and Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Brooklyn had known him as a member of their teams.
Jimmy never did anybody but himself harm. He was a remarkable ballplayer. His impulses were kindly, he loved the world and wanted it to love him, but everything went against him, and before 30 the health of his athletic frame sapped.
He has ended the life that during its last five years knew little but bitterness. His nature was too sensitive. He couldn't stand rebuffs; he was a shining target for unkindness.
Trifles that another man would have brushed aside with complete indifference Sebring brooded over and magnified till they became tragedies, and to this habit can most of his misfortunes be directly traced.
Jimmy Sebring Baseball Card | Ramly Turkish Cigarettes (#107)Baseball Almanac Research Library
More than 1,300 baseball players born in Pennsylvania have made it to the major leagues, but only one has come from the town of Liberty -- Jimmy Sebring. Almost as rare, Jimmy Sebring hit a World Series record nine singles in the 1903 World Series, the most ever in a 8-game Fall Classic, a record matched once more (by an Ironman), but a mark that cannot ever be beaten or tied (modern Fall Classics are 7-game series). Not quite as rare, but still incredibly uncommon, is the 1909 Ramly baseball card seen above featuring Jimmy. [World Series Hitting Records]
