Gary Sheffield was born on Monday, November 18, 1968, in Tampa, Florida. Sheffield was 19 years old when he broke into the big leagues on September 3, 1988, with the Milwaukee Brewers. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Gary Sheffield baseball stats page.
"'You can be shunned and scorned,' my grandfather said. 'You can be abused and confused, but if you have Inside Power, you have everything. Inside Power is what gets you through.' I thought Grandpa was talking about blasting the ball when they pitch it close to your body. Turns out that was only part of it. The business of Inside Power is the lesson of my lifetime. Fact is, it's the story of my life: how I learned it, lost it, and finally found it again; how Inside Power changed everything about me. Don't worry, I'm not going to preach or give some lecture. I'm just going to tell you a story about how a boy became a man." - Gary Sheffield. Inside Power. Crown Publishing. 3 April 2007. Page 1.

Gary Antonian Sheffield was a Major League Baseball player with the Milwaukee Brewers (1988-1991), San Diego Padres (1992-1993), Florida Marlins (1993-1998), Los Angeles Dodgers (1998-2001), Atlanta Braves (2002-2003), New York Yankees (2004-2006), Detroit Tigers (2007-2008), and New York Mets (2009). Did you know that Sheff, his nickname, is only of the few major league ballplayers who played in both a Little League World Series & Major League World Series during his career?

Did you know that when Gary Sheffield joined the 500 Home Runs Club, on April 17, 2009, he was the first player to reach the milestone with a pinch-hit home run, and the first player whose 500th career homer was the first home run hit with a new team (Sheff had been released by the Detroit Tigers in March 2009, then signed by the New York Mets just twelve days before).

When Gary Sheffield won a batting title in 1992, with the San Diego Padres, he became the only Friar not named Tony Gwynn to win a batting championship! Sheff won his first of five Silver Sluggers that year, four while roaming both American and National League outfields, this one at the hot corner — making Sheffield the first Padre to win a Silver Slugger at third base.
Orestes Destrade hit twenty homers with the (inaugural) 1993 Florida Marlins, setting the single season franchise record for home runs. In 1994, Gary Sheffield broke The Big O's record after launching twenty-seven homers. Two years later (in 1996), Sheff crushed his own record, hitting forty-two home runs, a still-standing Marlins single season record!
