"He's (Dick Sipek) mostly remembered for being the third deaf ballplayer to play major league baseball. He was the first not to have the nickname 'Dummy.' The first two deaf players were William 'Dummy' Hoy who played from 1888 to 1902 and Luther 'Dummy' Taylor who played with the New York Giants from 1900 to 1908 and mentored Sipek at the Illinois School for the Deaf in Jacksonville Illinois. Sipek was the last deaf major leaguer until Curtis Pride played from 1993 to 1998." - Obituary in the Quincy Herald-Whig (AP Wire, 07/18/2005) |
