"In the split second from the time the ball leaves the pitcher's hand until it reaches the plate you have to think about your stride, your hip action, your wrist action, determine how much, if any, the ball is going to break, and then decide whether to swing at it." - Duke Snider in The Sporting News (November 19, 1952) [Duke Snider Quotes]

Duke Snider Stats by Baseball Almanac |
Edwin Donald Snider was a Major League Baseball player for the Brooklyn Dodgers (1947-1957), Los Angeles Dodgers (1958–1962), New York Mets (1963), and San Francisco Giants (1964). Snider's dad nicknamed his son at an early age when he observed him after a game with some swagger, commenting, "Here comes the Duke."
Duke Snider | Baseball Hall of Fame Biography | August 31, 2011 | Duke Snider Videos
Did you know that Duke Snider, through today, is the all-time Dodgers franchise leader in home runs (389), RBIs (1,271), and extra base hits (814)? The Dodgers retired his #4 on July 6, 1980, and we honored him below with four "did you know" items:
Did you know that Duke Snider hit 40-or-more home runs in five consecutive seasons (1953-1957), had six 100 RBI seasons (1950, 1951 & 1953-1956), scored more than 100 runs six times (1949, 1950 & 1953-1956), but never won a Most Valuable Player Award?
In 1955, The Silver Fox and Roy Campanella both got eight first place votes, but the remaining distribution of second through seventh place votes gave Campy 226 points and left Duke at second place with 221 points. End of story. Right? Not quite! Snider said this in his book (The Duke Of Flatbush):
"Campy won his third Most Valuable Player Award, and I was second. That's how good the Dodgers were - two players on the same team finishing one-two in the MVP voting. Campy won by only five points, and goodness knows, if anyone was going to be the MVP instead of me, I'd want Campy to be the one. There was a controversy about the voting, however, and many of the fans and writers were upset, saying I should have won the award.
The reason for all the fuss was the ballot cast by a Philadelphia baseball writer who was sick and in the hospital. On his list of ten candidates for the award, he put Campy down twice and didn't put me down at all. The argument was that the ballot was invalid and the Baseball Writers Association of America, which conducts the voting among its members, should have thrown the ballot out. No one knew if the writer did it accidentally or on purpose, but instead of voiding the ballot, the officials counted the writer's first-place vote for Campy and simply disregarded the fifth-place vote for him."
Did you know that when Duke Snider hit two homers on September 22, 1957, off Robin Roberts, they were the last hits in Ebbets Field? A year later, Duke Snider collected a single on April 18, 1958, in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the first Dodger hit after the franchise relocated to Los Angeles. One last ballpark first, on April 10, 1962, when The Duke recorded the first Dodger hit at Dodger Stadium!
Did you know that the 1981 song by Terry Cashman, Talkin' Baseball, was originally called Willie, Mickey, and the Duke, a tribute to to Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle and Duke Snider - three of the greatest outfielders of the decade (1950s)?
Did you know that Duke Snider played in six World Series (1949, 1952, 1953, 1955, 1956, 1959), winning two rings (1955 - the last for the Brooklyn Dodgers and 1959 - the first for the Los Angeles Dodgers), and collected eleven total home runs, including four in 1952, and four in 1955, the first player in baseball history with four home runs in two Fall Classics?
Duke Snider | National Baseball Hall of Fame Plaque | Class of 1980 (HOF)
The National Baseball Hall of Fame inducted The Silver Fox in 1980, after he spent eleven years on the ballot. They shared this trivia, "On the baseball field, Duke was royalty. He gracefully patrolled centerfield in Brooklyn and was one of the most prolific power hitters of the 1950s, as he hit more home runs and had more RBI in the decade than any other player."
