Ted Tappe was born on Monday, February 2, 1931, in Seattle, Washington. Tappe was 19 years old when he broke into the big leagues on September 14, 1950, with the Cincinnati Reds. "A marvelous all-around athlete, Tappe broke Louie Soriano's Cross-State League scoring record in his senior year (1948) at Bremerton High and the Northwest junior college scoring record the following year at Olympic College. He scored 81 points in four games, leading the Rangers to a third-place finish and earning All-America honors at the 1949 National Junior College Tournament at Hutchinson, Kan. In 1960, Tappe started at guard as a sophomore at Washington State, helping the Cougars to a 19-13 record before the 19-year-old signed a Major League baseball contract with the Cincinnati Reds." - The Sun (12-28-1999)
