Ted Williams is the last player in baseball history to hit .400 or better during a regular season, a trivia question that most fans are well aware of, but did you know the last player to hit .400 in the National League was Bill Terry, who had 254 hits in 633 at-bats, a .401 average in 1930.

Bill Terry said, "To hit .400 you need a great start and you can't have a slump. The year I did it, I was around .410, .412 all season and I was really hitting the ball on the nose. Hitting is a business. With two strikes, you really protect that plate."

The Sporting News (TSN) established The Sporting News Most Valuable Player Award in 1929. The prestigious award was given annually to the player judged by TSN baseball experts as being the most valuable in each league. During its inaugural season (1929), Al Simmons was selected as the winner in the American League, but no player was picked from the National League that year. When TSN selected Bill Terry in 1930, he became the first National League player to ever receive the honor.

On June 27, 1930, Lefty O'Doul became the first National League player, in the 20th century, to hit two doubles and two triples in the same game. A year later, on September 13, 1931, Bill Terry joined the "club" and since that game, not one player in Giants history – through today – has every duplicated that hitting feat.

He drove in 100-or-more runs, six times, and collected 200-or-more hits six times, and many of those seasons, he was also serving as a player-manager. In 1954, Bill Terry was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
