Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"As a player, you don't really try to think about that (upset fans) too much. You want to go out and concentrate and do your job. That's just how I want to approach it. The fans have a right to boo, you know? If they boo, it's because you're not doing your job. You just try to go out and do the best you can." - Thome, Jim. Sports Illustrated. 2 March 2003. Page 17.

Did you know that Jim Thome was named one of the 100 Greatest Cleveland Indians Players ever? As part of the club’s 100th Anniversary Celebration in 2001, a panel of veteran baseball writers, historians and executives selected a roster of the Top 100 Greatest Indians and Thome was named one of the nine first basemen.

Jim Thome finished his career with six-hundred twelve home runs. On August 15, 2011, he became the eighth player (Hank Aaron, Barry Bonds, Ken Griffey, Jr., Willie Mays, Alex Rodriguez, Babe Ruth & Sammy Sosa) to reach the 600 home runs plateau. Here are some additional numbers of interest as they relate to this truly prolific Hall of Fame slugger:

1 - Jim Thome appeared on the Baseball Writers Association of America ballot one time, in 2018, and was elected to the Hall of Fame his first year of eligibility, appearing on 89.8% of the ballots. The class of 2018 also included Chipper Jones, Vladimir Guerrero, Trevor Hoffman, Jack Morris and Alan Trammell!

5 - Jim Thome, Larry Doby and Rick Manning are related. How? They each played for the Cleveland Indians and they each had a golden sombrero (Five Strikeouts in a 9-Inning Game).

13 - Jim Thome hit his first walk-off home run on June 15, 1994. On August 17, 2010, he hit his twelfth walk off homer, tying Babe Ruth for the Major League mark. On June 23, 2012, "Thomer" hit his thirteenth and final walk-off home run - the most by any hitter in baseball history.

25 - Jim Thome had his #25 retired by the Cleveland Indians on on August 18, 2018. During the ceremony Thomer said, "To have my jersey retired gives me the chills. To see my number hanging in the rafters in the company of Bob Feller, Lou Boudreau, Jackie Robinson, Mel Harder, Larry Doby, Earl Averill, Bob Lemon and Frank Robinson, I don't really know what to say. That's some 'Field of Dreams' stuff right there."

52 - Jim Thome hit 52 home runs with the 2002 Cleveland Indians, the most during a single season in franchise history, only the second Indians slugger with 50-or-more home runs during the same season. Do you know who did it first? [Answer]

337 - Jim Thome hit 337 home runs with the Cleveland Indians - the most in franchise history. His 1,008 walks, 1,400 strikeouts, and 87 intentional bases on balls are also still the most in team history to this date.

391 - Jim Thome played 391 games total with the Philadelphia Phillies, yet he was inducted into their Phillies Wall of Fame in 2016, the shortest tenure of any player ever recognized by the franchise. The plaque reads in part, "Signed by the Phillies to the largest contract in team history at the time. Finished 4th in NL MVP voting in 2003 after leading the league in home runs (47; tied for Major League lead) and ranking third in RBI (131). Set three single-season Phillies home run records in his first year with the team: most by a left-handed hitter, most at Veterans Stadium (28) and most by a first baseman. Named to the 2004 NL All-Star Team (.274-42-105). Was the third player in club history with back-to-back 40-homer seasons, joining hall of famers Chuck Klein and Mike Schmidt.

2,548 - Jim Thome struck out a LOT - 2,548 times to be exact, the second most in baseball history (Top 1,000)! Do you know what fellow hall of fame player had more? [Answer]

When Jim Thome steps to the plate, he slowly lifts his bat, points it towards the outfield, then settles into his stance. His signature batting stance was inspired by the fictional slugger Roy Hobbs in The Natural and was the idea of his Minor League Manager, Charlie Manuel who said (Sports Illustrated, July 13, 1998, 'The Pride Of Peoria Cleveland slugger Jim Thome is an All-Star starter and maybe--just maybe--the best player in his baseball'), "All the credit goes to Jimmy, because he works so hard and he's real coachable. One thing we came up with together. I was managing him at Charlotte in '93, on the AAA team, and we were in the clubhouse and the movie The Natural was on the TV. Robert Redford steps in, batting left, just like Jimmy. We were looking for a swing key, something that would open Jimmy up, let him hit to all fields. Redford steps in there and holds the bat with his right hand, way out in front of him, shoulder high. We both said, 'Let's try that.' Right away, it worked."
