Did you know that Luis Tiant has won more games than any other Cuban-born pitcher ever? His 229 career wins makes him the only pitcher born in Cuba with 200+ wins and well ahead of the next five: #2. Dolf Luque (194 wins), #3. Mike Cuellar (185 wins), #4. Livan Hernandez (178 wins), #5. Camilo Pascual (174 wins).

Luis Tiant appeared in one Fall Classic, the 1975 World Series, and in Game 1, he pitched a complete game shutout. On four days rest, in Game 4, he pitched another complete game, threw 163 pitches, and won again. Then in Game 6, he started the contest, lasted seven innings, and watched from the dugout as Carlton Fisk hit one of the most dramatic World Series, extra-inning, home runs ever hit, a 12th inning blast that forced a Game 7 finale. The Babe Ruth Award, a World Series Most Valuable Player Award (which now includes the entire post season) that is given out by the New York chapter of the Baseball Writers' Association of America, was given to El Tiante - the first recipient to earn the honor while playing on the losing team.

Luis Tiant made his Major League debut on July 19, 1964, at Yankee Stadium, and pitched a four-hit, complete game shutout, defeating Whitey Ford, and striking out eleven Bronx Bombers (Tony Kubek 3x, Clete Boyer 3x, Roger Maris 2x, Joe Pepitone 2x, and Whitey Ford once).

Luis Tiant (23 complete games in 1973, 0 shutouts) was the last pitcher in Major League history to throw at least twenty complete games, yet not have a single shutout. Before Tiant, Warren Spahn became the last National League pitcher with the statistical anomaly when he had 22 complete games in 1962, zero shutouts.

Luis Tiant was a three-time All-Star (1968, 1974, 1976), who led the American League in shutouts three times (1966, 1968, 1974), and struck out 200+ batters three years (1967, 1968, 1973). Tiant pitched for six different teams during his nineteen year career and his uniform number always contained a number three. In 1966, Tiant started the season (1966 Game Logs) with three consecutive shutouts, but Frank Robinson made sure he didn't get to four on May 8, 1966, CRUSHING a home run that completely flew out of Memorial Stadium (the first instance in stadium history).

Luis Tiant finished his career with 187 complete games; 16 of them were three-hitters, 10 of them were two-hitters, and 3 of them were one-hitters. Hall of Fame pitchers Catfish Hunter, Hank O'Day, Lefty Gomez, Don Drysdale, Dizzy Dean, Jim Bunning and Sandy Koufax have less career complete games (and wins).

The Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame was created in 1995 to honor the careers of former Boston Red Sox baseball players. The class of 1997 included, Carlton Fisk, Jimmie Foxx, Harry Hooper, Mel Parnell, Rico Petrocelli, Dick Radatz, Luis Tiant and Cy Young.
