Troy Tulowitzki Stats by Baseball Almanac |
Did you know that Troy Tulowitzki, on April 29, 2007, turned just the thirteenth unassisted triple play in Major League history? During a 9–7 home victory at Coors Field versus the Atlanta Braves, Tulowitzki caught third baseman Chipper Jones' line drive with the runners in motion, then stepped on second base to retire Kelly Johnson and tagged Edgar Renteria – who virtually stood there – before he could return to first base!
Troy Tulowitzki was the fifth Colorado Rockies player to hit for the cycle, joining the "club" on August 10, 2009. Rocks who came before Tulo were Dante Bichette (June 10, 1998), Neifi Perez (July 25, 1998), Todd Helton (June 19, 1999), and Mike Lansing (June 18, 2000).
When Troy Tulowitzki completed the cycle, he became the first (and to date the only) National League player in history with an unassisted triple play and a cycle, two rare baseball feats.
The only other player in baseball history with both a cycle and an unassisted triple play is John Valentin, who turned the triple play on July 8, 1994, and hit for the cycle on June 6, 1996, each feat with the Boston Red Sox.
Ozzie Smith (1987), Jay Bell (1993), Barry Larkin (1995 & 1996), Edgar Renteria (2002 & 2003), Jimmy Rollins (2007), and Troy Tulowitzki (2010 & 2011) — National League shortstops who have won a Gold Glove Award and Silver Slugger Award during the same season.
