Bob Watson Stats

Bob Watson was born on Wednesday, April 10, 1946, in Los Angeles, California. Watson was 20 years old when he broke into the big leagues on September 9, 1966, with the Houston Astros. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Bob Watson baseball stats page.

"Playing ball in New York and getting to the World Series in 1971, man, that's baseball. All my other years I just played the game, but this... this was baseball. It was a dream come true. As a young man I dreamed of playing in the majors, in an All-Star game and the World Series and thanks to the Yankees, I wound up doing all three. And the fact that we lost to the Dodgers in 1981... we had the better team, but just weren't meant to win." - Bob Watson in Baseball Digest (December 1995, Mike Blake, 'Stars of the 1980s Recall Some Special Baseball Moments, Page 54)

Did you know that Bob Watson was credited with scoring the 1,000,000th run in Major League history on May 4, 1975, at 12:32 in the afternoon? Watson scored from second base on a three-run homer by teammate Milt May at San Francisco's Candlestick Park. It was known that the 999,999th run had already scored, with sponsored updates being provided by and to every ballpark. Despite the lack of in-game urgency, Watson ran at full speed, reaching home plate approximately four seconds before Dave Concepcion, who had just homered in Cincinnati and was also racing around the basepaths. "I never ran so fast in my entire life," said Concepcion. But it was Bob "The Bull" Watson who won $10,000 and one million Tootsie Rolls provided by the event's sponsor.

On June 24, 1977, Bob Watson hit for the cycle as a member of the Houston Astros. On September 15, 1979, he hit for the cycle a second time, this time as a member of the Boston Red Sox. Watson at that time became the first player in Major League history to hit for the cycle in both the American and National League.
