"I was a power pitcher, and if you’re a dominant pitcher, you have to feel dominant and when a certain amount of players on a team kind of get your number early, it can really affect you. I talk to pitchers all the time about getting to the point where you beat a hitter before you ever throw a pitch." - John Wetteland in The Seattle Times (Steve Kelley, 03/03/2009, 'How John Wetteland helped save baseball in Seattle', Source)

John Wetteland Stats by Baseball Almanac |
Did you know John Wetteland had 295 saves during the 1990s (1990-1999), the most saves by any pitcher in Major League Baseball during that decade? Rounding out the top ten were 2. Dennis Eckersley (293 saves), 3. Randy Myers (291 saves), 4. Jeff Montgomery (285 saves), 5. Rick Aguilera (282 saves), 6. John Franco (268 saves), 7. Rod Beck (260 saves), 8. Lee Smith (244 saves), 9. Roberto Hernandez (234 saves), and 10. Trevor Hoffman (228 saves).
When Roy Face recorded three saves during the 1960 World Series, he broke the record of two saves in a Fall Classic originally set by Firpo Marberry (1924 World Series), then tied by Herb Pennock (1932 World Series) and Larry Sherry (1959 World Series). The record set by Roy Face in 1960, stood until then 1979 World Series, when Kent Tekulve tied him.
John Wetteland only pitched in one World Series, with the 1996 New York Yankees, during the 1996 World Series, and he made the most of it - becoming the first pitcher in baseball history to record four saves during a Fall Classic. To date, not one pitcher has ever even tied Wetteland.
John Wetteland won the World Series Most Valuable Player Award during the 1996 World Series for his four saves in five appearances, his one earned run allowed, and his six strikeouts - only the third relief pitcher in history to win the honor joining Larry Sherry (1959 World Series) and Rollie Fingers (1974 World Series).
John Wetteland pitched a scoreless 9th inning during the 1999 All-Star Game, the first Texas Rangers pitcher to earn a Midsummer Classic save. When the season ended, Wetteland's 43 saves were a new Rangers single season record for saves, breaking the team record once held by Tom Henke (40 saves in 1993), and since broken by Francisco Cordero (49 saves in 2004 / active record).
