Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"He's (Devon White) the greatest in the world. He's just awesome, man. I mean, I've probably slowed down a little in center field, but I know how the position should be played. And he's just incredible. The way he plays it, he's so nonchalant. You hit a ball and your thinking, 'No way he's going to get it.' The next thing you know he's standing there like this (glove at his chest). I've always loved the way the guy plays." - Puckett, Kirby. Devon White: A 'Classic Glove' in Center Field. Fainaru, Steve. Baseball Digest Contributor. March 1992.

Devon Markes White was a Major League Baseball player with the California Angels (1985-1990), Toronto Blue Jays (1991-1995), Florida Marlins (1996-1997), Arizona Diamondbacks (1998), Los Angeles Dodgers (1999-2000), and Milwaukee Brewers (2001). On April 10, 1981, Chili Davis made his Major League debut, with the San Francisco Giants (National League), the first player born in Jamaica to make it to the show. On September 2, 1985, Devon White made his Major League debut, with the California Angels, the second Jamaican big leaguer, the first to play in the American League.

Did you know that Devon White, who routinely made jaw-dropping catches, won seven Gold Glove Awards in the outfield in the American League, tied with Carl Yastrzemski for third most in league history at the time of his retirement, behind 10-time winner Al Kaline, and two 8-time winners; Paul Blair and Dwight Evans?

Another spectacular catch made by Devo occurred during Game 3 of the 1992 World Series against the Atlanta Braves. With David Justice batting and runners on first and second base, Justice hit a fly ball which White chased down and caught while jumping into the wall (video below). White then threw the ball to second baseman Roberto Alomar who threw to John Olerud at first to try to double up Terry Pendleton, but T.P. had already been called out for running past Deion Sanders. Olerud promptly threw the ball to third baseman Kelly Gruber who chased down Sanders, diving and clipping him on the heel with his glove.

The umpire, Bob Davidson, did not see the tag, and called Sanders safe, which cost the Jays the second triple play in World Series history. After the game, Davidson watched the replay and admitted he missed the call.

Some fans say White's famous catch is as impressive as the one made by Willie Mays in Game 1 of the 1954 World Series. Share your opinion with us on on our Baseball Almanac Facebook Group, on Baseball Almanac Twitter, via Baseball Almanac Messenger, or our baseball forum — Baseball Fever..

Devon White hit a single to left field off Joe Price in the sixth inning on September 9, 1989. Devo then proceeded to steal second, then third, then home — the first Angels player to ever steal all three bases during the same inning. [Stealing Second -> Stealing Third -> Stealing Home]
