"'We'd sit around and talk about pro ball, what was going to happen, how we'd do,' Hollier said. 'Alan and I were best friends. Neither of us had a dad, or much money, and we figured sports was our way out. Alan probably had less than any of us, but he wasn't going to let that stop him. I remember once when he didn't have any shoes to wear, so he wore these white Converse high-tops, and he didn't care who laughed at him.' What did matter was that Wiggins could out-run anyone in his bare feet. He knew he was going to play ball. He just knew it. All you had to do was ask him. 'Alan knew he had superior talent,' Stone said. 'I remember one day I was working, and he said to me, 'You know something, I'll never have to work a day in my life,' and he kind of laughed. You know something, he never did.'" - Nightengale, Bob. Los Angeles Times Staff Writer. Alan Anthony Wiggins was a Major League Baseball player with the San Diego Padres (1981-1985) and Baltimore Orioles (1985-1987). Did you know that when Wiggins swiped five bases on May 17, 1984, he set a San Diego Padres record for most stolen bases in a game? No Friar has yet to break Wiggins' mark, but two Padres have tied it - do you know who they are? [Trivia 1 | Trivia 2]

In 1980, Gene Richards became the first San Diego Padres player to ever steal at least sixty bases during the same season, finishing the year with sixty-one. Three years later, Alan Wiggins broke his record when he finished the 1983 season with sixty-six stolen bases. One year later (1984), Wiggins broke his own record and became the first, and through today the only, San Diego Padres player to steal seventy bases in a season!

Alan Wiggins' daughter, Candice Wiggins (WNBA Player / pictured above), wrote a truly moving article about her father. A tiny excerpt:
"He Taught Me Not to Judge"
My life begins when my father’s ended. He died when I was just shy of four years old. My brother was seven and my sister was nine, so they spent a lot more time with him and were more aware of who he was. I remember him holding me, but I don’t have the same vivid memories they do. I have flashes, and profound memories of his spirit.

Alan Wiggins Obituary | The Philadelphia Daily News | January 15, 1991 | Page 60Baseball Almanac Research Library
Alan Wiggins stole 29 bases in 59 games in 1981, then he was suspended after being arrested for possession of cocaine. Wiggins struggled with drug addiction throughout his career, received other suspensions, and was ultimately suspended indefinitely on August 31, 1987. Three and a half years later, the 160-pound speedster passed away in a hospital due to AIDS related complications. He weighed less than 75 pounds.
