Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"Dick Williams spent so many years waiting for the call from the Hall of Fame, the final few minutes were especially excruciating for the man who took the A's to World Series titles in 1972 and 1973. 'They said they would call and let me know the results around 7 a.m.,' Williams said Monday. 'Then 7 a.m. came, no call. At 7:01, no call. At 7:02, my wife and I looked at each other, no call. Between 7:02 and 7:03, the phone rang and it blew our minds. We're just so thankful. Norma and I broke down and cried.'" - Slusser, Susan. Columnist. The San Francisco Chronicle. 4 December 2007.

Did you know that Dick Williams was a truly versatile thirteen-year Major League utility player that became a coach, a manager, a front office consultant, and in 2008, a member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame? Williams was a highly respected, hard-driving, sharp-tongued (and controversial) manager from 1967 to 1969 and from 1971 to 1988. He led teams to three American League pennants (1967, 1972 & 1973), one National League pennant (1984) and two World Series championships (1972 & 1973). He is one of the few managers to win pennants in both the American and National League and he is only the second manager (the first was Bill McKechnie who led three National League teams; Pittsburgh in 1925, St. Louis in 1928, and Cincinnati in 1939, to the World Series) in Major League history to lead three different franchises (Boston in 1967, Oakland in 1972, and San Diego in 1984) to a World Series.
