Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"A lot has changed for Jerome Williams since June 27, 2003, the last time he threw one of these shutouts. In that 3,201-day span, he's gone through seven Major League organizations, pitched through two stints of independent ball, spent a year in Taiwan, gained weight and, for a while, lost hope. In short, he's done a lot of growing up. 'Back then I was young,' Williams said, with his 2-year-old son, Tai, seated on his lap. 'I didn't want to listen to nobody. I wanted to throw the ball by everybody. But now I'm a pitcher.'" - Gonzalez, Alden. MLB Staff Writer. Williams comes full circle with 1st shutout in 9 years. 2 May 2012.

Jerome Williams wore a puka-shell necklace until it broke, then he put those shells in a bag and sprinkled them on his uniform. He started wearing another puka-shell necklace, is always seen wearing one on and off the mound, and these days he pitches using a pink glove (and still wears a pula-shell necklace). Why? Staff writer Sam Whiting, SF Gate, 18 July 2004, Pitching Pukas, explains:

Whiting: How does "Strike Out Cancer" work?

Williams: Every strikeout that we (Giants pitchers) throw in a home game, Genentech donates $100 to the Wellness Community. Last night I had four strikeouts, so there's $400 right there.

Whiting: What got you involved in charity work for cancer?

Williams: My mother had breast cancer three years ago. I was 19 years old. She was my best friend.

Whiting: When did you start wearing the necklace?

Williams: The day before my mother passed away, she gave me a puka shell necklace to wear in memory of her.

Whiting: Are you still wearing the same one?

Williams: I broke the original one, and I called my brother to dig up another one that I buried right next to my mother. He sent it to me.

Whiting: How long did the luck last?

Williams: I won five games straight, then I lost my next game, so I broke it. I put it under the flap inside my hat. I kept it in there for the rest of the season.

Whiting: What about this season's necklace?

Williams: My dad actually made this for me. He got the shells straight from the beach and strung it together. I'll keep this forever or until we have another Puka Shell Day.

Whiting: What is Puka Shell Day?

Williams: Every time I pitch at home, they sell puka shell necklaces for like $10. All the proceeds go straight to breast cancer.

Whiting: How much did you raise last season?

Williams: I think it was . . . (PR person hands him a tally) ... $50,000.

Whiting: Do you wear the necklace everywhere?

Williams: If I don't have them on, people don't know who I am. I don't mind the recognition. Plus, I'm probably the only African American who wears puka shells.

Whiting: Where do you live during the season?

Williams: Across the street from the ballpark.

Whiting: Where do you hang out?

Williams: I like to stay with my wife, Sarah, because she's pregnant right now.

Whiting: Where did you meet her?

Williams: She was throwing out the first pitch for her birthday when I was in the minors in Fresno.

Whiting: Does your wife wear a puka shell necklace to the games?

Williams: Only when I pitch. Last night she didn't wear it and I got hurt.

Whiting: Did your mom see you pitch in the big leagues?

Williams: Never physically. But I leave my wife an extra ticket so my mom can sit next to her.
