"That game reminded me a lot of the first time we saw (Nolan) Ryan in the sense that it seemed like when the ball left his (Kerry Wood) hand, it hit the (catcher's) mitt at the same time." - Dierker, Larry. Houston Astros Manager / Former Pitching Ace. Baseball Digest's Rookie All-Stars of '98. Vass, George. Baseball Digest Editor. December 1998. Page 26.

Kerry Wood Stats by Baseball Almanac |
On June 7, 1884, Charlie Sweeney struck out nineteen batters in a nine-inning game setting a new National League record for strikeouts in a game. That senior circuit record was tied by Steve Carlton on September 15, 1969, Tom Seaver on April 22, 1970, and David Cone on October 6, 1991. On May 6, 1998, Kerry Wood broke the one-hundred fourteen year old record for strikeouts in a game by a National League pitcher when he mowed down a record setting twenty hitters. [Strikeout Records]
The batters who "helped" Kerry Wood make history were (in order): #1. Craig Biggio (1st inning / struck out). #2. Derek Bell (1st inning / struck out). #3. Jeff Bagwell (1st inning / called out on strikes). #4. Jack Howell (2nd inning / struck out). #5. Moises Alou (2nd inning / struck out). #6. Brad Ausmus (3rd inning / struck out). #7. Jeff Bagwell (4th inning / called out on strikes). #8. Jack Howell (4th inning / called out on strikes). #9. Moises Alou (5th inning / called out on strikes). #10. Dave Clark (5th inning / called out on strikes). #11. Ricky Gutierrez (5th inning / called out on strikes). #12. Shane Reynolds (6th inning / called out on strikes). #13. Jeff Bagwell (7th inning / struck out). #14. Jack Howell (7th inning / struck out). #15. Moises Alou (7th inning / struck out). #16. Dave Clark (8th inning / struck out). #17. Ricky Gutierrez (8th inning / struck out). #18. Brad Ausmus (8th inning / called out on strikes). #19. Bill Spiers (9th inning / struck out). #20. Derek Bell (9th inning / struck out).
Kerry Wood struck out 200+ hitters in a single season four times (1998, 2001, 2002, 2003) during his time on the mound for the Chicago Cubs. In team history, only one Cubbie pitcher has put together more 200-strikeout seasons, Hall of Famer Fergie Jenkins, who finished with five (1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971). We have taken a look at his strikeouts, let's look at a few of his wins:
Kerry Wood was the winning pitcher on September 30, 2003, game one of the 2003 Division Series. Wood was the winning pitcher on October 5, 2003, game five of the 2003 Division Series. The bookend wins helped the Cubs win their first postseason series since the 1908 World Series.
Kerry Wood was the winning pitcher on April 23, 2008, a game where he appeared in relief, blew the save, but earned the win in extra innings. The victory wasn't as large for him as it was for the franchise, it was the 10,000th win in team history for the Chicago Cubs.
Yu Darvish broke the Major League record for fastest pitcher to reach 500 career strikeouts in 2014, doing so in 401.2 innings pitched, three innings faster than the previous record holder - Kerry Wood. Who is the fastest pitcher to record 1,000 career strikeouts? That record is still held by Kerry Wood, who reached the plateau in 853 innings pitched (it was his 134th career game, also a Major League record for fewest number of games needed to reach the 1,000 strikeout mark).
