George Wright was a Major League Baseball player with the Boston Red Caps (1876–1878), Providence Grays (1879), Boston Red Caps (1880-1881), and Providence Grays (1882). Wright played in the National Association from 1871 through 1875, before the National League existed, and was one of the best players in its entire history!

Did you know that when George Wright stepped to plate on April 22, 1876, and grounded out to the shortstop, he became the first official batter in the first regular season game played in the history of the National League?

Did you know that when George's brother, Sam Wright, had a plate appearance that same historic day — in the same lineup with the same team — they became the first pair of brothers to play Major League Baseball?

In 1883, Francis Richter founded The Sporting Life, a weekly magazine devoted to coverage of all sports, with an emphasis on baseball. In 1887, Richter, and other baseball journalists, formed the Base Ball Reporters Association of America, also referred to as the National Base Ball Reporters' Association. And in 1914, Richter wrote the History and Records of Baseball: the American Nation's Chief Sport (Philadelphia: Sporting Life Publishing Co., 1914). In that historic book, Richter selected the greatest players in each position in each decade:

George Wright | National Baseball Hall of Fame Plaque | Class of 1937 (HOF)

The National Baseball Hall of Fame wrote, "George Wright was baseball’s first superstar player — an extraordinary shortstop" but he was enshrined in 1937, the same year he died, alongside Morgan Bulkeley and Ban Johnson, the first executives ever sent to Cooperstown!
