Team of the Century by Ray Curiale

The team of the century is not a hard one to guess, regardless of who your favorite team may be. The New York Yankees appeared in over one-third of all the American League championships, something no other club came close to, during the century and this original poem pays tribute to "The Team of the Century."

"Three bats in a row did Mariano shatter. How hapless looked that batter." - Ray Curiale

Ruth and Gehrig, Mantle and Maris, DiMaggio and Berra.

Names in baseball history that live forever.

They are the great players of yore,

who created the Yankee lore.

Now the Team of the Decade

new legends have they made,

Who will certainly be

a part of Yankee history.

Unsung heroes, many are they,

who helped show the way.

When things started to look bad.

Along came the two home runs from Chad.

And little Ricky Ledee,

showed everyone that he is ready.

Jason Grimsley did not have to be told,

that the Braves he must hold.

Then we came to the final game,

the one in which they would gain their fame.

With victory near at last,

they knew they would hold fast.

For the Braves were soon to face,

the Yankees mighty bullpen ace.

Three bats in a row did Mariano shatter.

How hapless looked that batter.

And every one knew it soon would be,

the final vic-TORRE of the Century.

Review the World Series menu and see which ones the New York Yankees won, see which ones they lost, and then review the sweeps page.
