So Long Riverfront by J. Kyle

Coach Joe Kyle shares what he knows about the game of baseball with the kids he coaches, helps his assistant coaches, and writes poems as gifts for his team —his coaches —and Baseball Almanac.

"We will all lose a treasure later this year, Riverfront Stadium will no longer be here. Great American Ballpark will come to be, The new place to create a baseball memory." - J. Kyle in So Long Riverfront (2002)

We will all lose a treasure later this year,
Riverfront Stadium will no longer be here.
Great American Ballpark will come to be,
The new place to create a baseball memory.

As a kid I would come to my very first game,
Mr. Sommerkamp announced every stars’ name.
Bench, Perez, Griffey, Morgan, and Rose,
All of these guys were my childhood heroes.

This concrete circle once produced a powerful machine,
That won two World Series like was never seen.
Those guys played for the love of the game,
Not like players today, wanting only fortune and fame.

The special games played here are too many to remember,
My favorite is that special night in an early September.
That familiar crouch started the fans screaming,
As 4192 dropped, the man’s tears came streaming.

Davis, Larkin, and the rest of the gang,
Brought the nineties in with a bang.
It has been a long time since we have had something to cheer,
Other than vendors bringing that next round of beer.

Marty and Joe have helped the fans see it all,
From Opening Day to the last day in fall.
This tireless duo never fail,
To bring you the game in great detail.

Our once new palace of modern design,
Has now struck out its final time.
The stadium of the future is now part of our past,
Thanks for the memories Riverfront, it was certainly a blast.

Riverfront Stadium / Cinergy Field majestically stood on the banks of the Ohio River in Ohio, was actually visible from the state of Kentucky, and had the original homeplate from the previously demolished Crosley Field.

On December 29, 2002, the O'Rourke Wrecking Company used one-thousand two-hundred seventy-five pounds of dynamite and nitroglycerine to destroy — in exactly thirty-seven seconds — Riverfront Stadium.

Riverfront Stadium was witness to the Big Red Machine's three World Championships, Hank Aaron's 714th career home run (tieing Babe Ruth), and one of the coldest (59° below zero) NFL games ever played (on January 10, 1982). Share your Rivertfront Stadium memories on Baseball Fever today.
