Remember Me by Jim Gaudet

Ken Keltner was a solid third-baseman for the Cleveland Indians in 1941. He had two All-Star appearances under his belt & was on his way to seven total over the course of a thirteen year career. He is often remembered for reasons other than those and Jim Gaudet shares that memory in Remember Me.

"In fact, the real beauty of baseball is that, if you know the game, it is like the placid duck paddling furiously under water — all sorts of things are happening or may be happening or could possibly happen soon, you think. Then, when something doeshappen it is that much more delicious. That, as much as the periodic action, is what makes baseball such a marvelous sport." - Frank Deford in Sports Illustrated (October 2000)

I was born a white man, often thought to be an Indian

Made my living on some diamonds...

to me, it was just a game

I've been called a thief...

because of one hot night in Cleveland

I robbed something from someone...

I never could repay

The people were all cheering...

when it happened down on third

When the dust finally settled...

baseball history had been thrown a curve

Joltin' Joe was the best I'd ever seen

And it's because of him that they...

   remember me...

   remember me

He laced one down the baseline,

I dove to make the snare

Scrambled to my feet, and then I nailed him,

   oh, I nailed him,

Yes I nailed him

That would be the last chance for Joe at the plate

His hitting had ended there at fifty-six straight

When my wife and I left the ballpark that night,

   policemen were by our side

'Cause Joe had lots of friends in Cleveland

who had lots of Yankee pride

I was seven times an all-star

and to a series we did go

But it just seems that whenever my name comes up

It's for the one I stole from Joe

The original compact disc had liner notes which specifically detailed the Remember Me song. Those notes appear in their original format below:

"Ken Keltner was a third baseman for the Cleveland Indians in the 1940's. Ken is most often remembered in baseball as being the player most responsible for ending Joe DiMaggio's monumental hitting streak. What people don't know is that he was a highly respected all-star in his own right. Ken always praised Joe DiMaggio as being the best he'd ever seen." - Source : Give Up The Ghost sleeve (1998)
