Double Play Records by Pitchers

The Major League career record for double plays by a pitcher is held by Phil Niekro who had eighty-three (seventy-one in the National League and twelve in the American League) during a twenty-four year career in both leagues.

On May 17, 1932, Milt Gaston of the Chicago White Sox became the first pitcher to start four double plays in one game. On May 19, 1948, Hal Newhouser of the Detroit Tigers became just the second pitcher in history to match that feat.

Did you know that Wilbur Cooper of Pittsburgh is the only pitcher in history to start two triple plays during a single season (1920) of play?
