Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium Historical Analysis

Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium was often synonymous with poor attendance and a poor playing field. Ted Turner arrived in 1976 at the same time 970 fans turned out to see a Braves versus Astros doubleheader.

Until 1989, Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium did not have its own full time groundskeeper and players often complained about the playing field. In came manager Bobby Cox and General Manager John Schuerholz and the stadium became home of the most dominant team of the 1990s.

"One of my goals in life was to be surrounded by unpretentious rich young men. Then I bought the Braves and I was surrounded by twenty-five of them." - Ted Turner

Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium

Three larger-than-lifesize bronze statues were outside Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium and they honored Hank Aaron, Ty Cobb and Phil Niekro.

Did you know that during the 1966 regular season there was a large totem-pole figurine named "Big Victor" tilted back-n-forth and it's eyes rolled whenever a Braves player hit a home run?

Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium was nicknamed "The Launching Pad" because of the unusually high number of home runs hit here on a regular basis, AND until Coors Field opened it led the Major Leagues in home runs hit.
