"If the behavior pattern of the Rockies holds true, 2012 will be a big year. After collapsing this season amid high expectations, the Rockies head into the offseason full of needs. Their needs include a front-of-the-rotation starter, and could use another veteran to protect them from depending too heavily on talented but erratic young hurlers. Meanwhile, the lineup needs increased run production at several positions. The Rockies entered the 2011 season believing depth was a strength, but the bench ended up exhausted and exposed. After being predicted to win the National League West this year, the Rockies won't have to worry about that next year. Their playoff experiences of 2007 and 2009 came after little preseason fanfare. Dramatic collapses happened in 2008 and 2011 -- and there were expectations last season, when the team contended until the final weeks before crawling to the finish -- when folks were expecting them to do well. In 2012, it could be good to fly under the radar." - By Thomas Harding on MLB.com (09/29/11, 'Rockies look to rebound under the radar in 2012', Source) |
