The Umpires

William McLean is "probably" the first professional (National Association) umpire and he was paid $5 per game to officiate.

The National Association (1871 - 1875) allowed the home team to select one (1) umpire from a group of five (5) put forth by the visiting team before each game.

The American Association had a rule that stated an umpire could be relieved from their duties if five (5) teams voted against him.
